The dealer told me they were glass but I had a suspected right away that they were synthetic rubies because they were such a popular choice for the period. All the same properties of a natural ruby but manmade (not glass.). These were all the rage during this period because they were such a ground breaking invention for the time and the results produced the color and clarity so sought after.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a tiny gem above the ruby as well that tests high in the ruby sapphire range. It is warm in color from the closed back and reads quite dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe earrings are a sort of dormeuse style but with sturdy lever backs that snap closed and curved ear wires that are inserted from the front of the ear. So they aren't as finicky to put on in that you don't have to try to latch them in the front which makes them a lot easier to wear. I actually got two pairs that are very similar to each other so I'll have another coming in the next few weeks, although my items are never exactly alike but feel free to check back!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLovely patina and color and such a pretty design. The old hallmarks have worn from age but they test at 14k and sold to me as such. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlease note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail. The rubies are in better than most condition with a nice sheen and polish and beautiful color. Super springy, strong and secure lever backs which is amazing to find considering the 125 year old gold hinges. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and \/ or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces.
