double-snakes-antique-ring-natural-ruby-36338
Double SNAKES Antique Ring Natural Ruby Emerald Rose Cut DIAMOND Halo Navette Ring 18k Gold Platinum Red Green Victorian

I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered one piece at a time from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!

ABOUT:
Fabulous design to this double snake ring set with diamonds and gemstones. Especially love that the piece bears the French antique period hallmark for 18k gold guaranteeing its age and survival time (actually thriving is a better word). From the Victorian era, or more appropriately since it is French, Napoleon III, but Americans aren't as familiar with that as a jewelry dating system so either one works!

Interesting and unique figural ring! Found in Paris, this navette has so many fun elements. With two snakes heads, one set with natural rubies and the other with natural emeralds, the two heads lie over a background of rose cut diamonds creating a halo around the ring face. The coiling details of the snakes then extend to the shoulders of the ring. One of the more interesting snake rings I've seen with a nod to the French toi et moi setting. Classic antique lattice gallery to the underside of the ring face. The rubies are old cut which is lovely to see.

Two tone coloring with the ring face topped in platinum to set the diamonds in a white metal which was customary for the period, while contrasting with the yellow gold of the snakes, the shank and the gallery of the ring. Color, sparkle and a unique design!

In ancient times, snakes represented the duality of good and evil, as well as being symbols of death and rebirth or immortality, transformation and healing, and even fertility. This motif was highly popularized, especially in ring form, by Queen Victoria who received one from Prince Albert who designed it after the Roman belief that the intertwined snake represented eternal and everlasting love. The representation of eternal love in a sort of toi et moi design was likely the intent for this piece. The snake design remained popular through the Victorian era and into the Art Nouveau period and at times.

French hallmark for 18k gold on the shank used primarily in the 1800s and discontinued by the Edwardian period.

Antique box is not included. Please note the detailed measurements that I always provide, as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures where I am required to show zoomed in detail.

MEASUREMENTS:
Currently measures a size 5.5 on the mandrel, a little over but doesn't reach 5 3/4 - best to discuss extent of sizing with your local jeweler who would be doing the work as opinions vary, but the hallmark is off to the side so sizing without disturbing it is doable. 4.1mm tall off the finger. Weighs 3.85 Grams.
Ring face is 28x10mm.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The diamonds are typical rough cut rose cuts with some rough edges and frosty spots. These are cut more like discs and are not thickly domed. They tend to always look this way when they are this size and just meant to add a glint of sparkle. The natural gemstones also have inclusions, two of the emeralds reading a bit milky. One green stone is paste and has a more vibrant green color with some chips / shards of loss but appears complete and fills the setting. You can seek that stone out in the photos. The stones are stable but there are some specks and nibbles in that area seen if you are seeking it out. I always recommend gentler wear on all my antique pieces, especially these 125+ year old pieces with so many small stones.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

SOCIAL:
Please feel free watch @mouseshouseantiques on Instagram for inventory drops, sneak peaks and previews!
