A unique signet with chunky footprint and sturdy hand feel. At each shoulder is a face of a horned, bearded mythological character and the shield shaped ring face is engraved with initials - CD?

I believe the image represents a Satyr, a mythological beast with both human and animal features including horns. These characters were popularized in 1887 when Stéphane Mallarmé published his "L'après-midi d'un faune", and / or Claude Debussy's famous "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune". These mischievous creatures of the wild were described as having an uninhibited and festive nature. It may also represent a faun, pan, green man or north wind man character, or even a demon or devil - but such a great look! Scarce design.

No hallmarks remain which is common for French pieces as they are marked in the back and often lost during a sizing or from wear. But sold to me from a reputable source in France where the standard is 18k and tested to confirm. It has a rich, warm antique gold patina with the slightest rosy glow.

Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pics. Antique boxes, props, staircases and bannisters ; ) not included.

Size 8, probably fits a little more snugly with the wide band. The ring face Is 13.5mm north south by 12mm, and the shoulders are 11mm wide. All solid gold with solid back and no vacant space. The piece weighs 8.9g.

Slightly differing hues to the back of the wide shank from a sizing or a few sizings over its long life. The insides of the ring face are reinforced with straps of gold at the shoulders, where the face detail meets the shield, I think probably to strengthen it after having it bent to do the aforementioned sizing. You can see the connection points while wearing but it does not look blobby or messy when worn, so this is mostly visible only from the inside. The edges of the band are a bit blunt from age and wear when you run your finger across it, something to consider if it would be worn very tightly on a finger.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
