French Vintage Solitaire 18k Gold Engagement Paris Find

ABOUT:

If you follow along with me at MHA, you know I typically concentrate on carrying antique pieces with old cut stones. But you know I also love yellow and other colored diamonds so this French vintage piece is still so me.

This listing now continues with a warm and sincere letter to the ever subjective GIA Institute:

Dear, GIA, Why you so crazy!? (tee tee ; )

While I normally do not pay much mind to Four C’s grading in my own collecting, especially for antique stones where modern rules don't apply, this here is a case where I would say the grading Does apply because the stone is modern cut.

So this one comes with a cert from GIA Belgium (there is no GIA lab in France). But the evaluator on that day in 2016 must have been a Grumpy McGrumpy-pants because they graded this stone an SI and I just don’t get it. The diamond is completely eye clean. It has only one inclusion along one side that is completely unseen by the eye and is difficult to seek out amidst the faceting even under strong magnification. More details below, my listings always provide much more detail than a letter grade provides.

It's a fabulous stone, a 1.52 carat cushion cut (classified as a "Round Cornered Square Modified Brilliant."). With even color of natural fancy brownish yellow.

Found in Paris, this preowned piece is crafted in 18k yellow gold with the French hallmarks for 18k gold with a goldsmith stamp. The gorgeous diamond is set with a bit of height in a classic and sturdy 6 prong setting ready for regular wear.

Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale. Comes as shown in the green and gold box.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

Size 5 1/4.
Diamond is 1.52 carat, 6.3mm.
The piece weighs 2.5 grams.
It stands 6.7mm tall off the finger.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

Not even a nibble or flea bite to the diamond. It is completely eye clean with no detectible inclusions when viewing it face down, even under strong magnification. There is one single feather inclusion along one side that is halfway down the stone, below the polished and faceted girdle and pushed right up against the edge of the pavilion facets, tucked up midway down the prong. It is visible when you study the underside of the diamond under magnification (as in - ring off the hand, studying the ring upside down). At some angles it disappears and even with a loupe it is difficult to detect so this one is more seen under a scope. I tried to capture it in the zoomy zoom zoomed photos, but I'm not sure I succeeded. I'm assuming they decided to give it an SI because of the length of the inclusion in that one spot since it isn't just a speck, but again it is not eye visible when wearing and it is the only thing to be found. The stone is completely stable. Polish graded very good, symmetry good, fluorescence medium blue. Sturdily set and ready to wear, some faint surface wear to the gold if anything but nicely polished.

What a wonderful color to the yellow stone - my favorite! A beautiful classic solitaire sold at close to my cost (Paris pricing amirite? - Must have bought it after a rare lunchtime Aperol Spritz treat, haha, I just wanted it in the shop : ). It's priced closer to retail because it pretty much is like new.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

SOCIAL:
Please feel free watch @mouseshouseantiques on Instagram for inventory drops, sneak peaks and previews!
