french-antique-18k-gold-red-paste-halo-71743
French Antique 18k Gold Red Paste Halo Rose Cut Diamond Earrings Victorian Faux Ruby Garnet Studs

ABOUT:
Another color and sparkle combo in the classic halo setting.
These red stone earrings have the flash of color at center to the nice sized stone, surrounded by a halo of 12 rose cut diamonds on each. A great antique look.

They were sold to me just as "red stones." I tested them and they definitely are not rubies, they give a bit of a reading but sit where glass and garnet / tourmaline overlap (and gem testers are always accurate) so I am listing them as paste to be safe since I don't see any inclusions.

Crafted in 18k. They are topped in a white precious metal to set the diamonds, I assume silver. Note that the ripples you see on the ear post are not damage, these are hallmark strikes leaving the little indentation there with the French marks for 18k gold.

I think they may have been converted from a button or cufflink with the way the back has the cross sections and the push backs look newer, unless the push backs are just replacements but the faces of them are definitely antique.

Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Nice size, 13.3mm by 11.5mm. The red stones are 8.5x6.2mm. The diamonds are each about 2.2mm give or take. 6mm deep for just the "button fronts" not including the post. Combined weight is 4.2g.
Depths vary on the rose cuts so carat weight is unknown and I would never remove them but they face up comparatively at about 1 carat total weight in diamonds just using millimeter diameter compared to a modern stone.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Each of the red stones has a small circular flake of loss on one end. Each stone still fills the space and retains its shape but you can see the unpolished area of loss. The 20x zoom will accent this a lot more than what is seen with normal wear so please seek that out. Despite handling it them week, I didn't notice it until looking at the zoomed photos myself : ). The diamonds are super primitive rough cuts, all frosty with natural inclusions, rough edges, free form shapes, varying hues, unpolished spots, like rough cut chips. They aren't the super thin disks with minimal faceting we sometimes see, but they aren't super tidy and chunky / crystal clear either. Some wear to the silver prongs, especially the outside edge ones where some are worn back completely so we don't recommend these or really any of our antiques for 24/7 wear. The diamonds are still surrounded on the inside edge and at the corner with additional prongs though so none of the stones move.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

SOCIAL:
Please feel free watch @mouseshouseantiques on Instagram for inventory drops, sneak peaks and previews!
