French Georgian Antique 18k GOLD Rose Cut DIAMOND Dangle EARRINGs Foil Back Dormeuse

ABOUT:

Beautiful antique French Georgian era dormeuse earrings with buttercup prongs propping up a rose cut diamond in a cupped / closed back and foiled collet setting. An additional little rose cut adorns the top for an added glint of sparkle. These have the appearance of a 1 carat total weight pair of earrings, measuring the way the stones face up (more info below).

These are in 18k antique rosy gold with a lever back. So dainty and elegant with the warm antique gold and beautiful settings with a lovely antique patina in the recesses.

The ear wires latch into the little catch atop the front of the earring behind the small diamond. Note that these have a bit of a larger gauge to the earwire / thicker gold compared to many daintier ear wires.

These are often dainty and petite (they are translated "sleepers" in French because they were meant to be worn overnight : ) so please note the measurements. Of course we don't recommend 24/7 wear on these antique pieces now and for these you should avoid getting them wet.

No hallmarks remain, these are early so they were likely never stamped. Sold to me as 18k which is the standard in France where I purchased them and tested to confirm.

Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

16mm from top of ear wire to bottom, the ear pendant part is a little over 7mm wide and the exposed / visible tops of the diamonds are about 4.7mm each. Again this is just the measurement of the visible portion of the diamonds, as they likely widen out into the collets which curve up and over the girdles of the stones so we don't exactly know where the diamond end and the gold begins. Depth of the stones is also unknown as they should not be removed but they have the appearance of about .45 carat for each of the larger stones / about 1 carat appearance for the pair. They weigh 2.3 grams combined.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

As with all my pieces this is in estate condition. Typical antique rose cut diamonds that were cut by hand with inclusions but they have a nice antique warm to gray color to the eye from age to the foil back - they provide a nice sparkle and antique look. A bit of frostiness again from age to the foil back. A few nicks and nibbles around one edge to each stone, seen mostly under magnification only. The diamonds are secure and still surrounded by the collet setting. These old pieces always need a gentle hand as pretty much all French dormeuse have a dainty fabrication (not to mention the very very old hinges) but they latch securely. These are very popular, I’ve sold many and buyers often report back that it just takes a little practice and patience inserting the hooked end from behind and then latching them while on the ear but that they get the hang of it with time. : ) It does take some tactile strength and dexterity to firmly handle the catch while still being careful of the hinge.

Still beautiful and appropriate for gentle handling considering age and fabrication.
