IBERIAN Antique 2 Carats Rose & Table Cut DIAMOND Victorian Celluloid Hair Comb 18k Gold
I am back from my inventory trips to Europe with quite a lot of antique treasures to share with you! Please stay tuned and feel free to follow on Instagram!
ABOUT:
Beautiful Georgian era antique Iberian 18k gold hair comb set with 32 old cut diamonds in closed back domed settings with cut down collets. The top center diamond is a beautiful table cut. The others are rose cuts. I love the floral design at the center where the largest rose cut is surrounded by little petals set with smaller rose cuts. This then extends out to the beautiful ribbon like scrolling gold work at the tops and sides.
This would be a beautiful something old for a bride. It would also be beautiful to have your local jeweler remove the gold element from the celluloid comb and attach a loop to wear it as a pendant (to me, it would look best with the table cut down at the bottom. Then it would have a sort of bow shape with the flower daisy design at top middle.)
Beautiful coloring and rich, buttery glowing gold patina. I purchased this in Paris. No hallmarks remain but sold to me from a reputable source as 18k. I actually suspect the gold is 19k, one of the standards there during the period, but I don't have a test for that. Great antique look to this large, striking piece.
MEASUREMENTS:
104mm end to end or a little over 4 inches, the gold element is 28x39mm. It weighs a sturdy 12.8 grams and the celluloid is typically quite light so some nice gold weight.
The table cut is 3.5x4.8mm. The six largest rose cuts are 4 to 5mm each and widen out an unknown amount in the cut down collets. The 25 smaller diamond accents are 1-2mm each.
Exact depths and widths of each stone are unknown as I would never remove them but with all 32 stones it is likely somewhere around 2 carats.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. Very old piece but all 32 of the stones are original and present with no gaps between the collet and girdle and no loose stones. They read gray from age to the foil back but not muddy or dark and they have a lovely sparkle. One of the larger diamonds on the right side is cracked and has some flakes of loss and a frosty appearance but is held tightly in the collet setting and appears complete / fills the collet setting. Some of the other diamonds have natural frosty inclusions as well but no dark carbon spots. Four of the larger collet set diamonds are applied to the piece with a rivet through the back - two of them are slightly loose but not going anywhere. It would just be something to consider if you were to convert the piece as removing the element from the comb would loosen those rivets.
Still an amazing historic piece with beautiful coloring and design, worthy of a collection - (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : ) .
But of course Due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item.
I dearly love, collect, use and sell antiques so please check out my other listings and thanks so much for stopping by my shop!
