imperial-topaz-georgian-era-french-old-41251
IMPERIAL TOPAZ Georgian Era French Old Cut Peach East West Collet Set Oval Antique Ring Domed Back Perfect Stone 18k Gold Foiled

I am selling an assortment of antique jewelry which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Please see my other offerings - thanks for stopping by!

ABOUT:
This is a personal collection release that got tons of interest in previews and I am actually still on the fence about selling it. : / Please don't buy it (tee hee!) The stone is just so perfect! It's an old cut gorgeous peach imperial topaz in a domed back foiled collet setting. These stones with their uncommon sunset hues are in my top three (with Perpignan garnets and old cut diamonds of course).

This came to me as a brooch with an 18k French gold hallmark used only from 1819 to 1838 (which is not present on the ring but was on the original brooch). So yes it is a conversion but with the incredible upside of the 200 year old natural gemstone being in nearly perfect condition. Zero scuffs, no real abrasions, the perfect sheen and polish and of course the most amazing and uncommon color that only imperial topaz can present. Even the foil is still better than most - No dark and muddy rust spots because it never got wet.

I didn't have the heart to remove it from the setting so we kept the domed back collet setting and forked shoulders from the brooch and curved it around to create the shank. As a result the shank is U shaped to accommodate the east west setting which gives it a great appearance on the finger.

This one needs gentle wear though due to the 200 year old gold collet and the fact that it shouldn't get wet. The value is really in the stone.

These are so sought after because the Imperial Topaz with their unique and special coloring accounts for less than 0.5% of all topaz found worldwide. Add in the 200 year old original antique factor and it becomes that much rarer.

No hallmarks remain but crafted in 18k gold using the original 200 year old brooch.

Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

It is a size 6 on the mandrel but fits much smaller due to the domed back. It'd say it fits closer to a size 5, maybe 5 1/4. I had it sized up as much as was comfortable so I guess it depends on the experience of your goldsmith but it's a delicate 200 year old beauty so I'd avoid it if at all possible. It weighs 2.4 grams.
The topaz is 13x9mm just measuring the exposed portion, so it widens out some millimeters further into the closed collet setting. Exact carat weight is unknown since we can't get an accurate diameter or depth measurement but stones of these millimeter measurements are anywhere from 3 to 5 carats. I'd lean towards the higher side because you can look through the stone and it does not appear thinly cut. The depth of the domed back setting to the top of the stone is 6.4mm.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

This is more of a collectors piece and needs gentle wear. The value is in the stone which has just one nick to one facet edge that can catch the light but is seen mostly under magnification. The stone moves in the gold collet setting which is 200 years old and has some wear, it can click when you shake it aggressively. I can see the edge of the stone in some spots so it really needs careful special occasion / not frequent wear. I have not seen a collet setting reinforced, perhaps it's possible to laser weld some small beads but often the old thin gold collets can't hold up to it. No rust but some cloudy spots to the closed back setting from age, seen mostly under magnification. There's two dings to the domed back and pinhead hole where the original pin hinge was. The foil is still quite reflecting and the stone is exceptional. Sold as is. It's so pretty.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

Thanks so much for looking at my items!

Please feel free watch @mouseshouseantiques on Instagram for inventory drops, sneak peaks and previews!
