ABOUT:

Beautiful oval cushion cut old mine cut diamond solitaire ring with rose cut diamond accents at each shoulder. Timeless, classic and so lovely. This antique from the early 1900s has a nice chunky old mine cut propped in the prongs.

No hallmarks remain but sold to me from a reputable source in Europe and tested to confirm.

Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale when it comes to the size of the stone. Antique box is not included.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

Size 7. The diamond is about 5.7x4mm. I would not remove it from the setting but it is a chunkier cut, just using online estimates / calculators I am getting about .6 carat for the center, .7 with the little rose cuts added.

The piece weighs 2.9g . It stands 6.5mm off the finger.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

All my pieces are pre owned and in estate condition. Typical antique diamond, the center one has some silk inclusions to the center not visible to the eye, but seen under magnification more when viewing the diamond at an angle than straight down. The expert diamond cutters of the time were so good at accenting each stones best qualities when they hand cut it - which is evident here in that they were able to blend the inclusions with the facets so that they are hardly seen from above. The center diamond is in great condition with just one tiny nibble seen under magnification only, no chips or cracks. The two rose cuts on one side are chipped with rough edges but they are small rough cuts so again not really evident when wearing unless you have excellent eyesight and are really searching for it. The prongs are in good shape, especially to the center stone holding it super securely which we love to find on antiques. Due to age - please note this is not a mint condition item.

Thanks so much for looking at my shop!

A note about antique diamonds:
The whole "4 C's" of cut, color, clarity, carat didn't come about until the 1940s so prior to that and especially on antique pieces, there was not as much emphasis placed on those things. (Sure people probably appreciated a certain look of a certain diamond as it appeared to the eye but it was not a graded scale like we have today.) So it is difficult to judge antique stones against modern day diamonds and their grading system. No two old cuts are the same as they were crafted in times lacking any modern standards. The diamond cutters of the time were experts at hand cutting each stone to enhance it which means that even lower color grades can be cut to appear whiter. It is also interesting that "lower graded" diamonds in today's scale system, were some of the best on the market during this period! So it is less about their grades and more about the unique play of light and color that each one can offer. I read one article that described: “When searching for the perfect old cut diamond (for you), you need to view them through different eyes as you would for a modern diamond. Laboratory grading reports don’t offer too much information in regards to the individual beauty or sparkle of an antique diamond. Antique diamonds are judged more on the individual character and uniqueness that each one potentially offers.”
