ABOUT:

Did you know that Mouse's House started out in sales of antique silver and chatelaine items? I still have a fondness for them and I like to find a few pieces that are a throw back to those days.

These chatelaine pencils are among my favorites and they make great gifts - little wearable works of art that are actually useful as well.

Listing is for the one pencil in the cover photo.

I purchased a few of these as seen in the group shots, from a dealer the last time I was in France. These are somewhat special in that while they are antique, from the late 1800s Art Nouveau Belle Époque period, they have never been used. They still have their original pencil inside which has never been sharpened. Often times the pencils are worn way down or missing completely from age of over 100 years but these were somehow stored away.

This one has a foliate design of little berries on a branch, both sides of the case are decorated. You pull out the pencil insert and re-insert it into the case to create a longer pencil to write with. It has a loop to hang from a chain.

I have two of these with a matching motif that I purchased from the same person there in France. Again listing is for one, but could be a fun matching gift for sisters or mother/daughter, etc.

French hallmark for solid silver (.800 purity which is their "sterling" standard) on the case and insert.

The piece measures 65mm in length when closed with the pencil inserted inside.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned with some age to them so they are in estate condition. It has some shallow on the pull tab of the pencil insert giving it a ripple here or there. Some faint surface wear and scratching from use and polishing over the years but the designs are still nice with a beautiful shine and design. Some patina which I prefer to retain to make the raised designs stand out. I noticed when I pushed the pencil all the way in, I had a hard time getting it out (needs a lot of finger strength : ). so moving forward I just didn't press it in as far and then it is easier to remove and still inserted tightly enough to stay put. : )

But Please note that due to age this piece is not in mint condition.

Thanks for stopping by my shop!
