ABOUT:
Wonderful French antique earrings in 18k gold set with red paste gemstones. These earrings have a great antique look, like something you would see in a period movie. The sides have a riveted ball design with the earrings being in a warm antique glowing gold with a diamond shaped applied and engraved design detail in the center which is accented in contrasting green gold. Beautiful buttery antique gold patina with the rosy highlights. Down on the bottom dangles an additional gold ball on a loop for added interest.
The stones did not test for me but they are lovely varying shades of deep red. It is possible they are garnets and the bezels were interfering with my gem tester but I am selling them as paste to be safe.
The earrings have a lever back that clips into the front. This style of earring also has an additional wire below connecting the front and back curved sections of the earring, I assume for added stability. The name of this style earring "Poissarde" is derived from the fishwives of Paris who were the first to wear them and who played a significant role during the French Revolution.
HALLMARKS:
The earrings are hallmarked twice on the wire with the French eagle hallmark for 18k gold, indicating that both the wires, and the body of the earrings themselves are 18k. There is also a goldsmith hallmark.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
They are a nice size, measuring 28mm from the top of the wire to the curved bottom and 7.7mm wide from riveted edge to riveted edge. The stones are each about 1.5mm. The pair weighs 2.45 grams combined.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
As with all my pieces these are pre-owned and in estate condition. Some discoloration or build up from age but beautiful buttery patina. Surface wear and scratches that can sometimes catch the light. Still nicely shaped, I don't see any dents or deep wear. The gold is beautiful and it is a very sweet pair. The crimped bezels are very secure. But as with all my pre-owned pieces - Please note this is not a mint condition item.
