French Antique Square Panel Antique 2.7 Carat Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Cobblestone Grid Cluster Ring
French Antique Square Panel Antique 2.7 Carat Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Cobblestone Grid Cluster Ring
ABOUT:
This antique old mine cut cluster ring has a wonderful texture, totaling 2.7 carats with high crowns and chunky cuts to the stones allowing them to really pop out of the geometric face and giving it a true cobblestone look. The diamonds are all set with numerous platinum bead prongs which adds to that texture.
This one definitely grabs the attention with 21 chunky old mine cuts encrusting the square (with clipped corners) ring face. The diamonds are set on a slightly raised platform with openwork cutouts to the gallery to allow the light to pass through.
A few of the old cut diamonds in the inside halo have crown facets that are long and triangular scissor cuts with really high crowns. (Mine cuts typically have three rows of facets to the crown whereas these have the single row of long facets). Extra chunky with that great antique sparkle. Perhaps a combination of a French cut / Old Mine Cut ? as diamond cutters at the time used their personal knowledge, taste and expertise to enhance each diamond. It is always fun to find uniquely cut antique diamonds!
Crafted in 18k white gold and topped in platinum for the diamond settings. Very fun to wear with a large footprint on the finger. I love looking at it from the side where the high crowns can catch the light. The inside bottom edge of the ring face is gracefully curved to be more comfortable against the finger. A special piece.
Found in France, with their later hallmark for 18k gold done during second hand testing. They likely did not test the ring face where the stones are set but when I study it under magnification it is clear and obvious.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 8 1/2
Weight: 6.4g
Ring face north south and east west measurement: 16mm
Height off the finger: 5.4mm
The center diamond is 4.8mm and measures 0.4 carat alone.
The outlining twelve diamonds are 3 to 3.2mm each and the inside halo of eight diamonds measure 2.5 to 2.7mm each - all for a total carat weight of around 2.7 carats. This is an estimation as I would not remove the stones from the setting for exact measurements and their depths vary.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Typical for old mine cuts, there are slightly varying hues between the stones, with the center diamond presenting with a slightly gray hue and a carbon spot inclusion that is eye visible. These things being the most visible due to its larger size. Some warmth to some of the smaller stones, mostly seen in the outlining stones with one reading the palest yellow under magnification. Two stones have indented natural inclusions that are very slightly eye visible, one on the table (this stone also has some additional frosty inclusions within) and the other stone which has it on a side facet. The other stones also have some natural inclusions - a warm single, some tiny carbon specks, some crystal and needle inclusions that are slightly eye visible.
Overall well matching. As the jewelers of the time used whatever stones they had available to them. Of course this was long before the millions of modern machine cut diamonds that are produced each year now which is what makes it special. : )
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
