GEORGIAN Era 1.5 Carat Mixed Rose & Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Cluster Ring French Antique 18k Gold Black Enamel Dutch Point Cut
ABOUT:
This is certainly a one of a kind antique. From the Georgian period, it features a fabulous chunky cut rose cut with domed top that comes to a slight point - so fun to view from the side! At 12 and 6 o'clock we have two additional rose cuts - these three in a line are set in closed, foil backed settings. Then on the right and left side are four old mine cut diamonds in open back settings.
A unique antique cluster ring, the face is slightly scalloped with black enamel highlights on the gold face between the stones. Nice antique sparkle totaling around 1 1/2 carat with the moody glitter of the rose cuts to contrast with the more fiery and more faceted old mine cuts. A lot of chunky texture in an interesting setting.
No hallmarks remain which is actually common for French pieces as they are marked in the back and often lost during a sizing or from wear. But sold to me from a reputable source in France where the standard is 18k and tested to confirm.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Currently measures 7 1/2.
It weighs a 3.65 grams.
Ring face is 13.5mm north south by 12mm. Height off the finger is about 5.8mm
Exact carat weight is unknown as it is not possible to measure depth in closed back settings but estimates to around 1.5 carat. The center rose cut is about 6mm by 5.2mm with a highly domed top. The other rose cuts are about 3.8mm. Each old mine cut is 3 to 3.3mm.
CONDITION NOTES:
One diamond appears like it is chipped or cracked in the photos, but it is not. It is just the gold bezel surrounding the stone which is more triangular in shape.
One of the old mine cuts was reset with little linear details around the bezel compared to the others that are set in smooth round bezels. The rose cuts read quite warm from age and deterioration to the foil back and some cloudiness as often seen on closed back pieces from the period. It still has a nice reflectivity so it has a good sparkle and brightens up in some light but the three in the center do read quite warm.
The center diamond has four warm brown silk inclusions that are eye visible but somewhat masked by the warmth of the setting. The old mine cuts are bright with only faint natural inclusions seen under magnification, some being eye clean. Wear to the enamel - (I've heard of people using enamel paint from a craft store, or even a tiny sharpie pen to fill in the low relief area to fill in the coloring so the loss doesn’t show as much. It is not as permanent a solution but it is less intense than enamel repair which is pretty much a lost art these days, so it does not risk damaging the antique piece.)
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
