ABOUT:

One of my most special pieces from my trip. A large, ornate antique pendant set with 47 (!) rose cut diamonds of varying shapes and sizes totaling at least 3 3/4 carats (exact depth of the stones unknown). This sturdy piece is in 18k gold topped in silver as was customary for the time to set diamonds in a white metal. The diamonds are in closed back foiled settings, the larger ones have cupped backs. Nice to see a piece of this age in its original condition and to find the diamonds quite bright and incredibly sparkly, without a lot of darkening / rust to the foil backing. Just that moody sparkle from the wonderfully untamed rose cuts.

It is quite heavy with a sturdy fabrication with a wonderful patina.

No missing stones, parts or pieces, the bale is set with three rose cuts and is connected by a loop to the body of the piece. Down at the bottom is an additional little rose cut drop of goodness connected by a loop to dangle freely. So the piece moves beautifully with a great antique look.

No hallmarks remain which is pretty typical for a piece of this age, but sold to me from a reputable source as 18k and silver and tested to confirm.

MEASUREMENTS:

Top to bottom it is almost 3 inches, and it is about 1 2/3 inch wide. It weighs a sturdy 15.9 grams.

The largest center diamond is about 6mm with what appears to be a nice depth with a domed top / dutch rose cut. Like most rose cuts these have a lower comparative carat weight to a modern machine cut diamond but the surface area gives it the appearance of a larger carat stone. A round modern brilliant diamond with 1 carat total weight has a diameter of around 6.5mm for comparison's sake and to give you an idea of scale.

The other six larger rose cuts are about 4mm each. There are about four measuring 1.5mm and the rest of them measure 2-3mm each. Exact depth of each is unknown as I would never remove them from their antique settings, but just using online estimations by millimeter I am getting a weight estimate of around 3 3/4 carats. Again not possible to know for sure as some of them may be sliced quite thin they the piece is completely encrusted giving it a really eye catching impact.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. Completely functional and sturdy. Typical antique diamonds with some irregular cuts, shapes, sizes, frosty spots and natural inclusions. The largest diamond has an uneven crease / loss to the surface that looks like the natural inclusions carried up to the surface resulting in an uneven area. The stone still appears compete and round to the eye but if you catch the surface up close in a reflection you can see the unpolished area and impression on the surface where the flakes of loss occurred from the area being weakened from the inclusion. Some of what you see looking at the largest diamond are also inclusions within the stone that can catch the light.

A few of the other diamonds have a nick or a rough edge here or there, typical of antique rose cuts. A few dark spots or warm hues seen under magnification. Like most all pieces of this antique fabrication, they reflect a somewhat grayish hue compared to an open backed setting. But the piece appears complete with no stones cracked through or large gaps, no major loss to any of the stones making them all look complete to the eye.

A bit of lead solder to the top and bottom back of the bale, not visible when wearing. Some patina to the gold and silver which can be polished up some but typically my buyers prefer original patina and in my opinion it has just the right amount.

Jewels of this period were meant to sparkle in the low light of candlelight and fireside dinners. With time, the foil often discolors but these still have a lovely color and amazing sparkle.

But of course Due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item. Feel free to request additional photos and videos as I have many others besides the 10 allowed here.
