ABOUT:

Historic glowing French antique ring 18k rosy gold set with rose cut foiled Perpignan garnets. The stones have the most beautiful deep pinkish purple color and reflect a lovely glow from the back.

A favorite of mine in the gemstone world! In olden times Perpignan Garnets were thought to cure blood disorders and excessive anger, and symbolized constancy and loyalty. They are named as such for the region where they were mined in the South of France. These mines have long since closed making them quite collectible to those that know them. They are known for their beautiful color and brilliance, along with the way the stones were cut. Antique box not included.

HALLMARKS:
Marked with the antique French hallmark for 18k gold used primarily in the 1800s and then discontinued.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

Currently a size 6 1/4 on my ring sizer mandrel. Ring face is large at 30x12mm (almost 1 1/4 inch north south). It weighs 4.5 grams.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

This old girls shows signs of her age. Sorrows, sorrows but we see this sometimes in these old jewels and they are important enough to be worth preserving, so I am selling it at a loss from what I paid. Two of the garnets have adhesive residue surrounding them. All the stones have nicks, scuffs, and abrasions, making some of the facets more of a matte finish. This is especially noticeable when you view the stones at an angle so that the facets catch the light. Under magnification, we can see some discoloration to the foil back, but the stone still have a lovely color, and they do still glow.

The center bezel set garnet is connected by gold wire/ loop to the ring face. These rings are very often fabricated in this method (it's one way to know it is a real Perpignan garnet!). I have one in my person collection with the same fabrication and have seen many others so this is not a repair but just how it was made. There are no cracks or deep chips, but you can note the surface where with some deeper scratches. Color is fantastic. Aside from the wear to the stones it is actually quite a sturdy piece. Selling as is, as the cost would be significantly more if the stones were in better condition, uncommon to find a Perpignan garnet ring of this scale.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
