THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT ~

ABOUT:
This one is more than meets the eye. On first glance it is a gold band with a somewhat snake like design with ribbed center and oval panel "head". Upon further inspection one discovers that the back is hinged and the "head" serves as a latch to open the two panels revealing open space within the ring where it could have held braided hair or some other small memento.
So many wonderful elements as inside the ring is engraved: "Minne af A. Wykman 5/19, 1875." Minne af translates to "Memory Of". The piece is fully and clearly hallmarked for Finland 18k gold, 1877. So it was created after the heartbreaking loss in memory of A. Wykman.
With the eternity band design, it is beautiful to wear, and of course the secret panels make it such a great conversation piece.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8. 4.3mm north to south and 1.6mm thick / deep. It weighs a sturdy 4.5 grams.
Quite uncommon and special.
Antique box is not included.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. The panels do stay latched close but they move and wobble because the ring is empty. I would think if a small strip of fabric or ribbon were to be added, it would create tension to press against the panels and make them move less. As it is now, you can see gaps between the channel / frame of the ring and the panel doors. The hinges also wobble but the latch functions well. I have been handling it quite a lot and am surprised at the high quality. But always recommend a gentle hand when dealing with tiny, intricate, 150 year old hinges! : ) I would avoid regularly opening and closing it just due to age.
