ABOUT:
This set has a great back story / provenance. Rare and important necklace and ring set adorned with natural rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls.
I purchased this from a friend of mine in Europe who acquired it from a woman in Bavaria, from a family with royal lineage. He told me "I purchased these from a Fürstin" which translates to "princess." : ) While beautiful pieces in their own right and a unique set, the added historical importance is also exciting.
Although Germany has not had an official legal monarchy since 1918, nearly all ducal families in Germany continued to be treated as dynastic / royalty for genealogical purposes.
My friend could not tell me the name of the royal family for privacy reasons, so I wish I knew more exact detail, but it is a beautiful antique, and important historic set. While with the woman, my friend was shown a painted portrait of her great grandmother wearing this exact necklace which he then showed to me. I also know the information to be true because I purchase very often from this friend and only one other time had he given me any kind of provenance like this, it was for a signet a few years back. I often wonder why anyone would sell pieces like these but then as a dealer, I often sell things I wish I could have kept : )
My friend dated this set to the Biedermeier era, Georgian to Victorian period. The necklace is set with old cut rubies and sapphires, and the ring with rubies and an emerald amidst all the tiny baroque seed pearls that are drilled and set by wire.
The pendant parts and ring are in 14k gold tested, the chain is a later replacement with a newer clasp marked for 8k gold.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
The ring is a 6 3/4, The necklace has a short chain, just 15 inches stretched end to end. Combined weight is 9.1 grams.
Antique box not included, will come in a new ring box.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are preowned and in estate condition. The spring ring is a bit finicky and has to be manually closed, or replacing it would make it even more secure. The emerald has inclusions and a crack to one side with a chip of loss but the stone appears complete to the eye, fully round and still stable in the prongs. One of the wires on the back of one of the pendant parts has broken, but has tension to hold its wrap around the back and keep the pearls in place. The very delicate old wires holding the pearls are all small and very old so the piece needs gentle wear for that reason. Antique patina and some discoloration to the pearls but still beautiful and wearable.
