SNAKE French Antique EMERALD Ruby DIAMOND 18k Gold Gemset Pendant Slide Green Eyes Coiled

ABOUT:

Awesome French vintage figural coiled snake pendant in 18k solid gold, encrusted with 34 diamonds, 3 rubies and 3 emeralds. I love how there are diamonds even set into the inside back of the snake's coiled body.

The piece also has a wonderfully detailed head and is gemset with a larger natural emerald and two tiny ones in its green eyes, and then on the neck is an accent of three red rubies.

Note that the emerald is Not cracked, it just has a natural inclusions running through the stone.

Very nice quality to the design, this can be worn several ways, from the loop at the tail with the snake hanging down, or run through the body where the snake coils around the chain, as the mouth of the snake has an opening to run the chain through. The clasps on my chains were too large for me to run it through but it would be possible to find a chain that would fit or remove and reattached the clasp once it is affixed to the chain. You could also add a jump ring as a holder, to hold the snake in place to the side of a chain where it looks like it is slithering up the side : ). It's a fun one to wear and style!

The snake was a popular motif during Victorian times (made even more popular by Queen Victoria herself) usually representing eternal love or good and evil among other things. I have had a few of these over the years but this one is more vintage than antique, as evidenced by the brilliant cut diamonds. Definitely a popular Victorian style though that was remade in the later vintage period.

Chain in photos is not included, it is a costume chain from Target that I use for staging : ). Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

MEASUREMENTS:
41x16mm and the head stands 8mm deep with the slide behind to run the chain through. It weighs a sturdy 5.5 grams. The diamonds are each about 1.5mm give or take, so with so many of them, probably around a half a carat total weight in diamonds.

HALLMARKS:
French hallmark for 18k gold on the tail loop.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The emerald has milky inclusions that carry up to the surface leaving a tiny crease, the inclusions are visible but the smaller than a hair crease is seen only under magnification and is a natural characteristic of the stone. Looks like it was a brooch at one time as there is an area underneath the head and tail is polished.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
