SNAKE French Antique RUBY 33 Rose Cut DIAMOND 18k Rose Gold Gemset Pendant Slide Figural

ABOUT:

This is a personal collection release - I acquired this piece in Paris last year. Awesome French antique figural coiled snake pendant in 18k solid gold, encrusted with 33 rose cut diamonds. The piece has wonderfully detailed head and is gemset with a natural ruby on its head flanked by 2 ruby eyes.

Very nice quality to the design, this can be worn several ways, from the loop at the tail with the snake hanging down, or run through the body where the snake coils around the chain, as the mouth of the snake has an opening to run the chain through. You could also affix a jump ring to hold the snake in place to the side of a chain. Quite eye catching French antique piece from the late 1800s Victorian Belle Epoque period.

The snake was a popular motif during Victorian times (made even more popular by Queen Victoria herself) usually representing eternal love or good and evil among other things.

Chain in photos is not included, it is a costume chain from Target that I use for staging : ). Please note it was overcast here in MN when I photographed it so the color will be even more vibrant in brighter light. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

MEASUREMENTS:
42x9mm and the head stands 6mm deep. It weighs a sturdy 5.1 grams. The diamonds are each about 1.5mm give or take.

HALLMARKS:
French hallmark for 18k gold, it has a rosy patina.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. Typical antique diamonds with some rough or frosty edges, irregular facets, shapes and sizes. This is what we expect to see on these little rose cuts as they were cut by hand. One of the smallest diamonds on the tail is a replacement single cut that was inserted upside down. At the center of the body is a replacement rose cut that is a thinly sliced disk so it appears quite clear / see through compared to the frostiness of the antique rose cuts, but it does still catch the light to sparkle when the piece moves. A few nicks and some natural inclusions to the ruby. The patina is lovely. Such a fun and interesting antique piece. May have been a brooch at one time as there platform underneath the head is polished.
