THISTLE Giardinetti 1.5 Carat Rose Cut Diamond EMERALD Floral GEORGIAN Ring 18k Gold Silver Antique

Fabulous Georgian antique figural floral giardinetti ring representing a thistle set with 10 rose cut diamonds, with a rectangular table cut emerald at the bottom "stem" for a wonderful pop of color.

This is an extremely reluctant personal collection release. I acquired it in England and have been enjoying it so much as it is one that people are immediately drawn to. I wonder if it is Scottish in origin with the thistle motif? Swoon... I love it. Just can't keep them all and we are saving up for some home renovation so I decided to offer it up.

Beautiful bright white sparkle especially to the large center diamond which measures 7x6mm with a nicely domed disco ball top. There are 10 rose cut diamonds in all, totaling around 1.5 carat total weight in diamonds.

The diamonds are set in foiled / closed back silver settings typical for the period to set diamonds in a white metal. No hallmarks remain as is common for pieces from this period. The shank and back of the ring face are in 18k gold.

Antique box in pics is not included but I will send it in an antique box from my collection as it deserves to be housed in something special : ).

MEASUREMENTS:

Currently measures a size 8, it weighs 3.8 grams. 18mm north to south on the finger and 18mm east to west across the hand. The center diamond is 7mm by 6mm with a relatively thick domed top. The others are 2.5 to 3mm each give or take - this is measuring the visible portions of the stones, as they widen out further in the setting. Exact depth and thereby carat weight is unknown but just using estimates by millimeter it is around 1 1/2 carats total in diamonds / 1.5Ctw Tdw.

Many old rose cuts in settings like these are often sliced quite thin like discs but seven of these (the center and side leaves) have some nice chunkiness and depth to them. The top three are the more thinly sliced rose cuts with less facets which was a design choice so that the top portion would lie flatter, and yet still catch the light for that wonderful moody sparkle.

CONDITION NOTES:

All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. The center large diamond is exceptional with a bright color, excellent foil condition and no eye visible inclusions. So often on pieces of this age we see a lot of dark muddying to the back from deterioration but this one is lovely. For the others - These are typical antique diamonds, very old with some natural inclusions. Most appear as a frosty spot or icy streak here or there. The top center, one of the more thinly sliced, has some dark carbon specks under magnification. The top three diamonds (northmost of the ring) also have some scuffs, nicks, nibbles, rough edges - due to them being so thinly cut and more prone to wear. This top portion of the ring also has dark patina so with the thin diamonds, those read a bit more gray than the ones at center and on the leaves which have a thicker cut and brighter sparkle. The patina could likely be polished up if desired but most of my buyers prefer original patina and one should not submerge or get these wet with the closed back. Pieces of this age and fabrication should generally be considered for gentler occasional wear.

The emerald has a wonderful glowing color but some abrasions to the surface that are eye visible. It moves slightly in the setting but the bezels are secure. The piece has a lovely patina, sparkle and shine. A fine example from the period. Surface wear and light scratches from use and wear to the gold band commensurate with age. One area of one of the forks at the shoulder has a tiny crease / hairline crack to the gold from age but the shank is still very stable. But it has held its shape well and has a sturdy feel with a striking size to the ring face.

It's so beautiful! Awesome and scarce piece with the thistle motif, from a very special era. But due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item.
