Unique French Antique SWIRL Old Rose Cut DiAMOND Ring 18k GOLD Romantic Gift Stacker Initial J G F Art Nouveau Belle Epoque
ABOUT:
Releasing this one from my personal collection. Unique French antique swirl design ring. I wonder if it might be intentional to an initial? Unless it is just an abstract Jugendstil type design. This is a Paris find.
Beautiful sparkle with a raised center prong set old cut diamond and then the swirl part is encrusted with 26 rose cut diamonds.
French hallmarks for 18k gold.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale. Antique box is not included.
Antique box is not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5 1/2. The largest center diamond is about 3.2mm. I would not remove the stones for an accurate measurement but just using online estimates and calculators it is around 0.4 carat total weight.
The piece weighs 4.25 grams. It stands 5mm off the finger. Ring face is 18mm wide north to south.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre owned and in estate condition. Typical antique rose cut diamonds with some faint natural inclusions, nothing visible to the eye and no carbon specks. These are the old rough hand cut rose cuts, very small like little shards to add a glint of sparkle. I can see a few nicks, but the rest are rough or frosty edges that were likely always cut that way, typical for rose cuts of this size and age. Some nicks to the outside edges of the center diamond which also has some natural inclusions. One prong is bent but there are plenty with length to hold the stone in place. Some wear to a few of the prongs which we expect to see on these original antique pieces. Some build up behind the small rose cuts in the hard to reach openings but I do not like to overclean my antique rings with small stones. : ) Some wear to the rose cut prongs as expected for a piece of this age but nothing is moving. But Due to age - please note this is not a mint condition item.
Thanks so much for looking at my shop!
Will be sent with additional insurance, expedited delivery and signature confirmation upon delivery at my cost.

A note about antique diamonds:
The whole "4 C's" of cut, color, clarity, carat didn't come about until the 1940s so prior to that and especially on antique pieces, there was not as much emphasis placed on those things. (Sure people probably appreciated a certain look of a certain diamond as it appeared to the eye but it was not a graded scale like we have today.) So it is difficult to judge antique stones against modern day diamonds and their grading system. No two old cuts are the same as they were crafted in times lacking any modern standards. The diamond cutters of the time were experts at hand cutting each stone to enhance it which means that even lower color grades can be cut to appear whiter. It is also interesting that "lower graded" diamonds in today's scale system, were some of the best on the market during this period! So it is less about their grades and more about the unique play of light and color that each one can offer. I read one article that described: “When searching for the perfect old cut diamond (for you), you need to view them through different eyes as you would for a modern diamond. Laboratory grading reports don’t offer too much information in regards to the individual beauty or sparkle of an antique diamond. Antique diamonds are judged more on the individual character and uniqueness that each one potentially offers.”
