Antique 1 CARAT Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Solitaire Engagement Ring 18k White Gold PLATINUM French Art Deco
Antique 1 CARAT Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Solitaire Engagement Ring 18k White Gold PLATINUM French Art Deco
ABOUT:
This fiery beauty is just so fun to wear. A little over 1 full carat old mine cut diamond solitaire suspended in four prongs in a square ring phase. The beautiful old cut diamond has a slight warmth to palest yellow hue that I and many collectors seek out in our antique stones. As this was hand cut long before the four c's of grading modern diamonds ever existed. This French antique piece is from the Art Deco period, crafted and hallmarked for 18k white gold and platinum.
A simple and elegant shank propping the chunky cut diamond nice and tall. Adding to its appeal, those unique prongs are holding the diamond securely on all sides making this beauty ready for regular wear.
The diamond seems to vary in hue based on the lighting. It isn't a vibrant yellow but doesn't have the bright white color so you can see the slight warmth while wearing which I just find so beautiful. Hopefully the photos in various lighting condition help as they are a true representation of how the piece responds to sun and ambient light. (See my website for additional photos).
I purchased this in Paris. I love antique diamonds, even those with inclusions typical for the time, because some of those were still among the best available in the market during that period, and were expertly cut by hand to enhance their best characteristics. So I don’t often like to compare antique stones against modern grading standards that were created for mathematically perfected machine cut stones - BUT This diamond, for an old stone has particularly lovely fire reflecting a noticeable flash with the other colors of the rainbow. It was actually quite noticeable, especially while trying to photograph it. I'm amazed by it now as I wear it in low light how glittery and it is. The majority of antique diamonds fall in the I-J-K colour grades or warmer. This is partly because most of the rough diamonds at that time came from mines that produced warmer-colored diamonds. The reputable place I purchase this from graded it I - J in color / SI / and with no florescence in case that information is helpful (even though many in the trade do not rely on the Four C's scale for antique stones).
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 6 1/4, a little over. The diamond measures about 6.5mm, cushion cut as we expect to see in these old, expertly hand cut stones. It has a wonderfully chunky depth and a slightly thick frosted girdle (also expected and looked for in antique stones) taking it to a little over 1 full carat. It stands a proud 6.4mm tall off the finger, suspending the chunky cut diamond to be viewable from all sides, with little triangular cutouts to the ring face below.
The piece weighs 3.4grams.
CONDITION NOTES:
The stone is eye clean and even under strong magnificaiton I see only the faintest of natural inclusions. What I did notice is there are two frosty right on the top outside edge just above the girdle. One appears to have occurred in the polishing as it is uniform to the thick frosted girdle all the way around the stone. (And yes, we want to see a thicker frosted girdle on the stone because if it did not have it, it would not be antique and we would be suspicious! : ) The other frosty spot appears similar but may be the shallowest flake of loss to the edge. I noticed when studying the piece under magnification, that those frosty spots are reflecting through the stone. This is not super eye visible but something I noticed when studying it at angles under strong lit magnification. The stone absolutely still appears complete and round and not chipped or cracked, but it's just that slight texture difference right on the edge in those two places. Exceptional fire to this diamond with such a beautiful warmth. Prongs in excellent shape.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
