ABOUT:
I've been hunting for double row rings for quite awhile now and love this one with the 16 small but mighty / chunky old mine cut diamonds totaling 1.25 carat cropping out of the ring face. In the ever popular gold with silver collets setting, but with open backs behind the stones! This makes it easier to wear, clean, etc. as you don't have to worry if it gets wet, compared to closed back and foiled settings from the period.
This one stacks so beautifully for a wonderful texture and antique sparkle. It has little bead prongs around the interior sides of the stones which add to the texture of the ring face, which is accented by the very pretty openwork scrolling details at each shoulder.
Found in the UK, it is crafted in 14k gold (tested, no hallmarks remain) with the diamonds each enthroned in silver collet settings, as was typical for the period to set diamonds in a white metal. The place I purchased this from believed it to be from the early 1800s Georgian period, it is definitely an antique piece but with the open backs, I wonder if it might be Victorian so I am selling it as that to be safe - as Victorian era (or older : )
Beautiful quality to the piece with many of the stones being eye clean and little to spot by way of inclusions even under strong magnification. Many of the diamonds have the wonderful extra large culets lending the stones that amazing hand chiseled appearance. I just love antique diamonds like these.
I've been wearing it in heavy rotation with a buttery gold band and even layered with a solitaire. My favorite is to see it on the hand slightly angled to see those lofty crowns to the old hand cut stones creating that cobblestone texture. Nice carat weight but still so relevant, versatile and wearable.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
It is a size 6. It weighs 2.05 grams.
The diamonds are 2.5mm give or take, one or two slightly smaller and a few up to 2.8mm each just measuring the exposed portions of the stones, which widen out further an unknown amount in the silver collet settings which surround each stone up and over the girdles. Nice and chunky cuts with high crowns. I do not remove stones from antique settings for an exact measurement as it would damage the piece but estimates to at least 1 1/4 carat total weight in diamonds.
The ring face is 20mm east west on the finger from diamond to diamond and it stands 3mm tall off the finger to the high crowns of the diamonds. Yet it is still low profile and very comfortable to wear. The double row of stones is 5.5mm north south on the finger.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition.
As mentioned a very nice clarity to the antique stones which is fun to find, being that they were hand cut in much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut stones produced each year now. Back then, long before the Four C's existed, there wasn't emphasis placed on any ratings so it is always a treat to find antique stones with such good clarity. Some varying warmth typical for the period. It faces up well matching for the most part but some of this is due to how the side stones reflect the light differently, because they are splayed outward as the ring face curves across the finger, allowing you to see their high crowns from the side. I love finding antique stones like these, having been cut during a time when the rough diamonds were in a much more limited supply and came from mines that produced warmer stones.
No damage to any stones. Typical antique diamonds in that they have some faint natural inclusions. For the most part what is seen is under magnification so the piece is for the most part eye clean. No glaring ink spots or anything that jumps out with normal wear. Just the warmth to the stones being the only thing noticeable.
The bezels look good, in age appropriate condition. I typically always recommend gentler wear for my 100 year old pieces with multiple stones in original condition. Evidence of a sizing to the back.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
