ABOUT:
A beautiful antique old mine cut diamond propped up in sturdy prongs ready for daily wear in a classic and timeless setting! This French antique piece is crafted in platinum with the main old mine cut diamond measuring about 1.9 carat with rose cut accents at each shoulder taking the ring over 2 carats total weight in antique diamonds. The center stone is also on the spreadier side so it actually faces up even larger than its carat weight. Measuring 8.2mm, it faces up to the scale of a 2.2 + carat diamond approximately.
The base of the setting also creates a white halo of platinum around the stone, almost serving as an illusion setting to make the stone appear even bigger by surrounding it with a white metal. The setting sits lower to the finger than many raised prong set stones (see exact measurements below) with graceful sloping designs between each set of triple prongs.
A bright and sparkly stone but it does have some signs of age allowing it to sell at a comparatively lower price point than if it were flawless. But one must also remember this is a one of a kind antique stone, hand cut in much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of modern stones made each year now. No two are ever alike and this one, despite its evidence of age, has withstood the test of time.
Found in France but no hallmarks remain. Tests as platinum and certainly looks the part. I like it in a mixed metal stack with a chunky gold band!
I don't prefer to grade my antique diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about way later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. The scale does not do antique stones justice as they were expertly hand cut to their best advantage, in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now. Their uniqueness and quirks are expected and part of their charm, but this one has a bright color and excellent fire.
Note though that it does have some natural inclusions typical for the period and some nibbles around the girdle. More details below. My items do very well without paperwork as I describe everything in detail so there is no certification included.
Especially considering the age of the stone, it is very lively and sparkly, not dull or lifeless in any way.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8 1/4. With the sturdy prongs, this could be a good candidate for sizing by your local jeweler although the back of the shank is on the thinner side, 1.17mm wide by .7mm deep. Usually they say within 2 sizes is a good guide for sizing but this is something to discuss with the person doing the work as opinions vary.
The diamond measures about 8.2mm by 7.8mm cushion cut. I do not remove antique stones from their settings for exact measurements but it estimates to around 1.9 carats. The largest stone is slightly spready, facing up closer to 2.2 to 2.4 carats by modern cushion cut measurements.
The 6 rose cut accents are each about 1.7mm each taking the ring over 2 carats total weight in diamonds, again as an estimate.
The ring face is 9.1mm north south (again intended to make the stone look even larger) and stands 5.7mm tall off the finger.
The piece weighs 3.1grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All original antique setting and stone.
The larger diamond really faces up nice and bright white with a beautiful fire and sparkle. It does have natural inclusions that are eye visible. One is an eye visible carbon spot but the expert diamond cutter situated it exactly over the culet so looking down on the stone, it looks like you're looking into the culet of an old cut. It is somewhat oblong and there is a smaller carbon speck off to the side of that one that is less visible. The diamond has a faint pink fluorescence under a black light.
The stone does certainly have signs of age with nibbles and flea bites around several areas of the girdle between each set of prongs. As a whole, the stone appears complete, also assisted by the platinum halo at the base of the setting, but when you really study the outside edge you can see the rough edges including a frosty indented natural inclusion carrying over to the top outside edge of one spot of the stone and an indented natural notch to the girdle adjacent to that.
The prongs are in good shape and sturdy in that each of the four sets consists of triple prongs. One center prong in one set is worn back but the stone is well held and ready for regular wear.
Evidence of a sizing to the back and a little patch inside one shoulder although there is no repair visible or any break of any kind on the outside, perhaps it was just wearing a bit thin there so they added a tiny bit of fortification on the inside only.
Note the nibbles though, she does have signs of age. But wow is she fun to wear! Sold as is with price commensurate to clarity and wear, as it would be exponentially higher if the stone was flawless, being so hard to find authentic antique natural diamonds of this size.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
