ABOUT:
A gorgeous French antique old mine & old European cut diamond oval navette with a nice size footprint on the finger, amazing sparkle, and a unique setting with three of the nineteen diamonds, the largest ones, raised in prongs at the center.
Totaling around 2.5 carat, the raised diamonds add a great dimension and texture to the already wonderful cobblestone design of ring face, adding wonderful depth.
I love all antique diamonds, even those with natural variances and "lower grades" that don't apply well to antique hand cut stones but this cluster really stands out in the fire department, as in the stones are really lively and fiery. Amazing to see considering they were cut in such a limited supply at that time.
Found in Paris. Antique period French hallmark for 18k gold used primarily in the 1800s and discontinued by the early 1900s. The setting has ribbed shoulders leading up to diamond accents set in raised shoulders on each side for added sparkle. A classic French cluster design.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale. Antique box is not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7. The center diamond is 5x4.8mm and about .43 carat alone. The adjacent are about 3.7mm each / .23 carat each. The twelve in the halo are 2.7 to 3.3mm each. The shoulder accent stones about 1.8mm. I would never remove them from the antique setting for exact measurements but estimates to around 2.5 carat total weight in diamonds.
The ring face is 20x12mm.
Weight is 4.8grams.
Height is 6.5mm tall off the finger to the raised diamonds.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Prongs are in good shape, the outside prongs on the east and west ends are worn back but the stones are well held by four other prongs.
Several of the diamonds are eye clean. As is typical for antique diamonds hand cut long before the Four C's was invented for machine cut diamonds and their mathematically perfect facets, some have small inclusions, a squiggle or a fleck, some frosty spots here or there, very slightly eye visible (but not to my eyes which are in their forties! : ). No dark carbon spots, no overall frostiness so nothing glaring. Also typical they have a slight warmth here or there when the ring is turned to the side with stones that face up brighter, but again nothing glaring and are overall well matching. Better than most fire to these stones, especially considering age.
One outside smaller stone has a nibble, another has a shallow frosty flake of loss, but all appear complete in form while wearing. Of the three larger, most noticeable stones, one on the end has an indented natural inclusion resulting in a crease at the surface, slightly eye visible if you are seeking it out and it catches the light.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
