Superb color and sparkle to these timeless and classic antique dormeuse earrings. The light cornflower blue sapphires take center stage raised in prongs, each surrounded by a halo of 9 rose cut diamonds for that fabulous antique sparkle. The color and contrast are so wonderful.

I purchased these in France although I am not sure of their origin as they are crafted in 14k (the standard for French made pieces is always 18k). No hallmarks remain but sold to me as 14k and tested.

These are often dainty and petite (the "dormeuse" are translated "sleepers" in French because they were meant to be worn overnight : ) so please note the measurements. Of course we don't recommend 24/7 wear on these old pieces now due to age.

Antique box in photos is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail. Especially with earrings, there is often feedback of them being smaller than expected - the measurements are always in the listings if you don't mind double checking.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

They measure about 13.7mm top to bottom, the round part is 8.8mm wide. Combined weight is 2.5g. Each diamond 2mm in diameter give or take. I would not remove them for exact carat weights and they vary in depths. Online estimations suspect a .05 carat weight for a 2mm stone so with the 18 diamonds it would total 0.9 carat, but based on my experience, they seem smaller than that to me so I am listing them as .7 carat total diamond weight to be safe / conservative (.35 carat diamond weight per earring). The sapphires are about 4mm each.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

These need very gentle wear and are priced accordingly for that reason. There are several worn prongs (which can be reinforced but it is important to keep cost in mind). Additionally, one has a weak hinge. They are dainty 120+ year old gold settings so we see often find this age related wear. The hinge does have some spring and snaps closed, but it doesn't nest tightly to the ear wire, rather it leaves a small gap and moves slightly - you can look for this small gap in the close up photo - it seems to me they close far enough to stay on the ear and earrings are by nature more gently worn, but we definitely do not recommend 24/7 wear on these. I'd wear them out to dinner, but perhaps not to dance the night away if that makes sense : )

As with all my pieces this is in estate condition. Some of the end prongs look a bit short but earrings are by nature pretty gently worn and the stones are all secure. Each of the sapphires has a nick not really visible to the eye unless you catch it in a reflection of direct light but the diamonds look great with their old chunky mine cuts. And then one of the sapphires also has some tinier smaller than a pinhead abrasions not visible without very strong magnification.

Typical old rose cut diamonds with some natural inclusions, irregular facets, etc. as these antique diamonds were cut by hand. Rough edges and some nicks, they often look this way from the period. They have a wonderful sparkle. Some natural inclusions to the sapphires and one has chip or surface inclusion to the pavilion, only seen when looking through the stone under magnification.

These are definitely on the more delicate side though, sold as is.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
