Antique Fiery 1.6 CARAT Old European Cut DIAMOND Bezel Set PLATINUM Solitaire Engagement Ring French Edwardian
Antique Fiery 1.6 CARAT Old European Cut DIAMOND Bezel Set PLATINUM Solitaire Engagement Ring French Edwardian
ABOUT:
This. Setting!
Timeless and elegant low profile bezel setting holding a very fiery antique 1.6 Carat old European cut diamond. This French antique piece from the Edwardian period is crafted in platinum. The bezel setting hugs the finger with a smooth top highlighting the bright white stone which shoots a rainbow fire out from its exceptional sparkle.
The underside of the ring face has an open work lattice design and the slightly flared shoulders are set with a marquise milgrain detail set with a small single cut diamond for an added glint of sparkle. We are having a blizzard in Minnesota today so the photos and video don't do the stone justice but I will attempt to update when we get some sunshine.
Found in France with a goldsmith stamp on the back - No purity hallmarks remain which is actually common for French pieces as they are marked in the back and often lost during a sizing as was the case here.
I don't prefer to grade my antique diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about way later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. The scale does not do antique stones justice as they were expertly hand cut to their best advantage, in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now. Their uniqueness and quirks are expected and part of their charm, and this one does have inclusions but is exceptional in fire and color. It is very lively and sparkly, not dull or lifeless in any way.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8 1/4, with evidence of a sizing up at the back. With the sturdy setting, this should be a good candidate for sizing by your local jeweler. Usually they say within 2 sizes is a guide but - something to discuss with the person doing the work.
The diamond measures about 7.5mm and has a nice depth. I do not remove antique stones from their settings for exact measurements but estimates to a little over 1.6 carat.
The piece weighs 3.15grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The diamond is of beautiful bright white color with a wonderful fire and sparkle. It does have a smattering of several natural inclusions, a faint wisp that can catch the light and some linear needles along with some small carbon specks - these are slightly eye visible if you are seeking them out but not glaring. Only one carbon spot is a bit larger and eye visible once you spot it amidst the sparkle. My condition and diamond reports are always very picky, pointing out everything I see under magnification and true to life. To my eyes, which are in their forties, the inclusions are not glaring or distracting. I have to study the stone under magnification to spot them, then pull it away to seek them out in that area, so despite the inclusions being somewhat numerous under magnification, this one really wears beautifully.
No damage of any kind to the stone, it is sturdy in the bezel and ready for regular wear. Surface wear to the platinum but in age appropriate condition.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
