Strong recommendation that this one Must be worn stacked : ). Fortunately with the flat edges it layers wonderfully. I wonder what stories this one could tell...
I love the face up appearance of this five stone. The buttery and rich antique 18k gold, the five old mine cut diamonds slightly tapering in size. The way they are flush set into the ring face but with high crowns that crop out. It looks fabulous on the finger. But - it appears to have been nested or part of a connected set at one time and has since been separated. So the north and south edges appear to have been sliced flat which has left the skinniest of skinny gold to the back.
It does not flex or bend with handling but it looks like if you really applied pressure, one could split the thinly sliced gold at the back, especially at the little notch shown which is where the hallmark impression originally was.
It's quite odd but if it were me, I'd wear it stacked anyway and in doing so, you prevent any discomfort or danger of damage because when it is nested up again another ring, that thin edge is no longer felt. It's possible it could be worn alone gently, but it's important to note the blunt edge. It could also be easily soldered to another ring in your collection to be worn as a permanent double stack similar to the custom of doing so with wedding and engagement rings.
You can see the notch at the back where the hallmark impression was but it is no longer legible. It tests at 18k.
Still a sought after and very fun layering piece. With wonderful old mine cuts totaling around carats and most of them eye clean. The way it was sliced gives the ring face a bit of a free form design as well, as some stones are surrounded in gold and a few have the stones' edge peeking out. It's an interesting piece!

MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 6 1/4
3.8mm north south by 3.4mm deep at the ring face.
But the back of the shank is just 0.25mm north south and 1mm deep at the smallest part and quite blunt so again please note the detailed description above.
Weight: 2.8 grams.
The center stone is 3.3mm, the next two about 3.2mm , the end stones 2.9 and 3mm. Totals around 0.7 carat total weight in diamonds. This is an estimate as I would not remove the stone from the setting for exact measurements and the exact depth is not measurable in the setting.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
See detailed notes above, as such the edge is quite blunt and not very comfortable to slide against the finger. See suggestions above. Would have been priced significantly higher if not for these things, as flush set five stones are very sought after.
Typical antique diamonds, one has a little smattering of carbon, another a few frosty flecks, a few are eye clean. The stones aren't huge so there is nothing really glaring. I love how the crowns pop out of the flush setting.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
