ABOUT:
So wonderful to find antique rose cut diamonds with this exceptional clarity. Easy to wear in an open back setting with a buttercup design leading up to the bezel set diamond. The diamond shape is wonderfully organic and freeform, another thing we love to find in antiques with hand cut stones. It's a sort of softened triangular shape that faces up well over 1.25 carat (actual carat weight is unknown).
I got this one at an antique market in Belgium. It is crafted in 18k gold which has a rosy patina from age. Inside the ring face, the diamond setting has a domed back, so this one was most certainly foil backed and closed at one time and was very tidily opened to allow the light to pass through and let the disco ball facets shine!
Comfortable to wear too with the bezel setting where it is smooth and won't catch on clothing. This one could be considered unisex too.
I was excited to find the stone in such excellent condition as it does not have a pavilion (the pointed base that brilliant cuts have) but no damage to the stone. Also nice to see that there are no dark carbon spots. Note that the diamonds have flat backs and domed tops, cut more like a disk than a deep diamond with pavilion.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
The diamond is 7.4x6.9mm depending on which angle you measure at, with the freeform slightly triangular shape. Like most rose cuts, it is spready so these always face up much larger than their actual carat weight, appearing over 1.25 carat. Again actual carat weight is much less and not really possible to determine without removing the stone to put on a scale which I don't prefer to do as it would certainly cause damage to the piece.
Size 6 3/4, a little over.
The ring face is 8.9mm north south and stands 5.5mm tall off the finger.
The piece weighs 4.6grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Eye clean with exceptional clarity for an old cut, not reading warm and shooting rainbows all over. Typical for antique stones and the way they are cut that you can see right through them, you can see some natural inclusions but that is not the case with this one. There is one indented natural inclusions around the girdle that I can detect only under magnification studying it from the side. The stone is stable and well set but it can move a slight bit in the bezel and click sometimes when you tap it. It is in no danger of falling out. Stable setting but one shoulder has some spidery lines to the gold and solder bubbles to the gold on the inside so it was either sized or fortified there. There is a testing mark to the gold where some was shaved away but these things are not really seen while wearing. If you look at the inside of the shank you can see several seams and joins to the gold but again the piece is stable. I never advice harsh wear on these very old pieces though.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
