Antique Old Octagon Cut EMERALD 1.5 Carat Old Mine Cut Diamond Line Ring Edwardian Stacker Gift French 18k Gold Platinum Old Step Cut Octagonal
ABOUT:
I love the shape, color and sparkle of this one with the tapered shoulders set with old mine cuts leading up to the linear three stone center. In the middle we have an old cut emerald, octagonal in shape with step cuts leading to the large trapezoidal open culet. It is flanked by an old mine cut diamond above and below. An excellent glitter factor with about 1.5 carat total weight in diamonds.
The emerald has an exceptional deep vivid green color which compliments the bright sparkle of the diamonds. And the diamond encrusted shoulders add a nice texture.
Such beautiful geometry, color and glitter. Timeless setting, such a gorgeous antique look on the finger.
Found in France with their hallmark for 18k gold. The setting is in 18k yellow gold and topped in platinum or white gold. (They don't usually hallmark for that thin layer and I don't scratch test ring face tops for fear of damage. It is just a thin layer of white precious metal on the ring face, as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal). The emerald prongs are contrasting in yellow gold.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale. Antique box is not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7 1/4, a little under.
I do not remove my stones from their settings for exact measurements and exact depths are unknown. Each of the two larger old mine cuts are about 5mm give or take (.5 and .58 carat). The old mine cuts in the shoulders taper from 2.8 to 1.8mm. Total carat weight in diamonds alone estimates to around 1.5 carats.
The emerald is about 7 by 5.5mm.
The piece weighs 3.8 grams. The ring face is 17.5mm north south where the three stones align. It stands 5.5mm off the finger.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The emerald has a deep scratch with some abrasions along it on one edge. Please look for this in photos as it can catch the light and is eye visible. Aside from that, the stone has a nice sheen and polish so it is not a case where the hole top of the stone appears dull and flat, but just the one scratch. Because of the scratch, I am not listing it at the margin I would have liked but I have such a hard time finding good emeralds and I love this one. There are fainter nibbles and scratches to the emerald seen under magnification. Gorgeous deep green color with some frosty inclusions but the emerald does not appear super swirly within. In the close up, some of what is seen is just a sparse layer of buildup behind the stone, I gave it a light cleaning but couldn't quite reach it all.
For antique diamonds these have a very nice bright white color and very nice fire, the two largest stones especially. One is eye clean, the other has a milky silk inclusions that has some carbon specks right up against the girdle edge, but under magnification it reflects around half the stone. Still seems to face up quite bright and white but the milkiness in that spot is eye visible making that edge of the diamond frosty. The smaller stones are also typical antique stones with fainter frosty inclusions but as the stones are smaller there is nothing glaring there, they tend to always look this way.
A worn prong here or there but all three stones have enough remaining prongs to hold them securely on all sides. Such a gorgeous setting.
Please also note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
