ABOUT:

One of my most popular styles - the wonderfully stackable five stone band. I try to acquire as many as I can because they are so versatile and wearable that they are always very popular.

Antique 18k gold ring with platinum bezel setting holding five old cut diamonds totaling around .45 carat total weight. The antique stones possess a wonderful warmth often found in the antique period and even sought after by collectors (like me! : ). The center three stones are a very light brown to champagne color with slightly whiter diamonds at each end.

Lends an interesting geometry with a wonderful patina of antique gold and the 5 diamonds in just slightly graduating sizes.

Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

I acquired this piece in England. It is stamped with "PT and 18CT" for 18k gold with the platinum top. It has some additional stamps, a serial number and some maker's marks. With the linear face, it stacks well next to bands so it would make a wonderful anniversary ring or even engagement ring to stack next to a wedding band. I have some additional pics of it stacked on my website so feel free to check those.

Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

It is a size 6 3/4. It weighs 2.6 grams.
The largest center diamond is 4.7mm and is about 0.4 carat alone. The adjacent two are around 3.8mm each. The end stones are slightly smaller, about 3.1mm each. I do not remove stones from antique settings for an exact measurement, for fear of damaging the piece. but estimates to a little over 1 carat total weight in diamonds.

The ring face splays 21mm east west on the finger from diamond to diamond and it stands 5mm tall off the finger.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition.
As mentioned the center three stones have a beautiful champagne to light brown color while the end stones are a bit whiter. It faces up well matching but the champagne hues are beautiful and can be more noticeable in direct light. I love finding antique stones like these, having been cut during a time when the rough diamonds were in a much more limited supply and came from mines that produced warmer stones.
No damage to any stones. Typical antique diamonds in that they have some faint natural inclusions. For the most part what is seen is under magnification so the piece is for the most part eye clean with a small needle inclusion to a slightly eye visible frosty spot here or there. No glaring ink spots or anything that jumps out with normal wear.

The bezels look good, in age appropriate condition. I typically always recommend gentler wear for my 100 year old pieces with multiple stones in original condition. Some rub marks to the vertical edges of the setting below the bezel of the largest center stone, it was clearly worn stacked so this is something we typically see : )

Shank is sturdy. But Due to age - please note this is not a mint condition item.

A note about antique diamonds:
The whole "4 C's" of cut, color, clarity, carat didn't come about until the 1940s so prior to that and especially on antique pieces, there was not as much emphasis placed on those things. (Sure, people probably appreciated a certain look of a certain diamond as it appeared to the eye but it was not a strict graded scale like we have today.)
So it is difficult to judge antique stones against modern day diamonds with mathematically perfect proportions and their grading system. No two old cuts are the same as they were crafted in times lacking any modern standards. The diamond cutters of the time were experts at hand cutting these stones to enhance them, which means that even lower color grades can be cut to appear whiter. It is also interesting that "lower graded" diamonds in today's scale system, were some of the best on the market during this period! Many antique diamonds with warmth to their color were often chosen intentionally by diamond cutters of the time and are even sought after by collectors.
So it is less about their grades and more about the unique play of light and color that each one can offer. I read one article that put it: “When searching for the perfect old cut diamond (for you), you need to view them through different eyes as you would for a modern diamond, Laboratory grading reports don’t offer too much information in regards to their individual beauty or sparkle which are based more on their individual character and uniqueness that each one potentially offers.” An interesting comparison of antique vs. modern diamonds. : )

Thanks so much for looking at my items!
