ABOUT:
A beautiful antique old mine cut diamond propped up in sturdy prongs ready for daily wear! This French antique piece is crafted in 18k gold with the old mine cut diamond measuring 1.6 carat. This one is a spready stone so it actually faces up even larger than its carat weight. Measuring 7.9mm, it faces up to the scale of a 1.8 or 1.9 carat diamond approximately.
A bright and sparkly stone. This would make a special engagement ring, anniversary or right hand statement ring or a great stacker with nice height and sturdy shoulders.
Found in France with their hallmark for 18k gold on the shank.
I don't prefer to grade my antique diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about way later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. The scale does not do antique stones justice as they were expertly hand cut to their best advantage, in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now. Their uniqueness and quirks are expected and part of their charm, but this one has a bright color and excellent fire.
Note though that it does have some natural inclusions typical for the period. This is because it was cut during a time when diamonds were mined in much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of diamonds produced each year now. At that time, much less attention was paid to things like the Four C's scale that didn't exist.
Especially considering the age of the stone, it is very lively and sparkly, not dull or lifeless in any way.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5. With the sturdy prongs, this would be a good candidate for sizing by your local jeweler. Usually they say within 2 sizes is a guide but this could possibly handle more - something to discuss with the person doing the work.
The diamond measures about 7.9mm and is a spready cut. I do not remove antique stones from their settings for exact measurements but it measures around 1.6 carat, facing up larger at 1.8 or 1.9 carat due to how it was cut..
The piece weighs 3.2grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
I'm not sure if the setting is as old as the stone as it is quite sturdy. The diamond has a frosted girdle that shows as being on the wider side, more evidence of it being an antique stone. The prongs are ready for daily wear. When looking through the stone, the frosted girdle can reflect around creating a frosty halo within. This again is just one of the quirks of the antique diamond, each being hand cut one at a time.
The diamond really faces up nice and bright white with a beautiful sparkle. It does have natural inclusions that are eye visible. They are actually kind of cool - appearing on one outside edge in a pattern that looks like the way frost spreads from the corners of window panes at Christmastime in Minnesota. Faint wispy needle pattern.
No dark or glaring carbon whatsoever, but rather just the shimmers of that icy pattern on that one edge that spans between two of the prongs.
There is a mostly transparent pocket inclusion under the table and one indented natural inclusion on one of the outlining facets outside the table. These latter two are less visible than the frosty area but they can catch the light to be eye visible like a speck if you are seeking them out in the right lighting conditions. Priced accordingly as I would have listed it for higher if the stone was eye clean but it's a nice and spready one that is beautiful to wear. Always fun to find in sturdy and classic yellow gold setting.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
