ABOUT:

It is my exciting goal to have one of these in my personal collection some day - just so fun to wear out and about with the most amazing sparkle of the old cut stones! This gorgeous antique hinged bangle is uncommon in that it is set with rose cut diamonds in open backed settings, each stone set into square bezels. As the stones graduate in size with the largest at the center, so does the face of the bracelet, tapering to a triangular point at each end. Openwork filigree detail on each edge blow the stones allows the light to pass through.

Seventeen antique rose cuts in all, the largest at center measures about 4.5mm. Definitely a wonderful antique look to the piece with varying domes and shapes to the rose cuts - round, oval, some a more softened triangular shape.

Found in France with their hallmark for 18k and old control marks. The face of the bracelet with the square bezels is topped in silver as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal. The gold has a wonderful warm patina with some rosy highlights, nothing like the vibrant pink rose gold of today but a lovely antique rosiness to the gold.

Any props or additional items not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

MEASUREMENTS:

Substantial enough to wear alone as well, measuring 6.5mm north south at the widest area in the center and stands 8mm tall off the wrist.

It's difficult to measure the exact inside circumference but it is around 6 1/4 to 6 1/2inches. I have a 5 1/2 inch wrist and it is too large for me although I could probably get away with it in a stack. It is not so large that it slips off my hand, I have to open it to get it off and on, but it is too large for me in that it spins around freely on my wrist so the diamonds can be spun to the underside. It would fit better on a larger wrist than mine where it is tight enough to keep the diamonds facing up. The inside measurements measuring the cross sections (to compare with your bracelets at home or to draw it out for scale) are 58mm by 48mm oval. The safety chain is about 2 1/4 inches long to expand it when open.

It weighs 13.5 grams.

I would never remove the diamonds from the antique piece for an exact measurement, so carat weight is unknown, especially with the varying depths and shapes to each of the rose cuts. Like most rose cuts they have a lower comparative carat weight than a modern diamond since they have flat backs and no pavilions, but the surface area gives it the appearance of a larger carat stone. Rose cut diamonds are typically quite spready. But if you were to compare the diameters to brilliant cut diamonds, this piece has face up appearance of 2.6 carats, if it were set with modern diamonds. (Actual carat weight is of course less). The center stone is 4.5mm with ten stones in the 3 to 4.3mm range, and then three on each end in the 2 to 2.7mm range.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The push button clasp works perfectly and snaps very securely into place. The hinge is nice and firm and it closes super securely. There is the additional safety chain as well although the clasp is very sturdy. Considering age of this antique piece this one is in better shape with no ripples, dings or dents. None of the stones move but I always recommend gentler wear on 125 plus year old pieces with multiple stones set with the little bead prongs.

Typical antique rose cut diamonds with some slightly warm hues here and there but overall well matching and the awesome chunky sparkle that these antique diamonds display as they reflect the light differently. The warmth due to the majority of the rough diamonds at that time coming from mines that produced warmer-colored diamonds, which I and many collectors love to find. These were cut long before the "Four C's" scale was invented for modern machine cut diamonds with their mathematically perfected facets. The modern grading scale for diamonds doesn't typical do justice to the uniqueness of these stones that were hand cut with methods and standards no longer practiced.

Also typical for antique stones, some have some natural inclusions, some being eye clean, others with slightly to eye visible inclusions, mostly frosty spots, some unpolished areas and slightly rough edges. None are cracked and appear complete in their settings. The largest center stone has some curved top of the fingernail like inclusions and a carbon spot with some frostiness around it and unevenness where it carried up to the surface on the underside of the stone. The top face up part of the stone has a nice dome but you can see the uneven area to the underside under magnification and a little bit of a rough edge there. The end stones are warm in color as they are in closed back settings. Some of what is seen has likely always been that way as they were rough cut by hand. They tend to always look like this. The varying shapes is wonderful to see and some with a nice dome. A great antique sparkle.

Some dark patina to the silver and gold which could easily be polished up but most of my buyers prefer original patina.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
