ABOUT:
Classic old mine cut diamond three stone band. Impactful and sparkly worn alone, and layers well with other bands. This one has a nice height to it with the diamonds propped up in the platinum pronged setting but with sought after 18k yellow gold fabrication for the majority. Wonderfully unique old cut stones with slightly varying sized open culets. Nice size stones totaling around 2.3 carats total weight in diamonds.
Found in England. The piece is hallmarked "Plat 18CT" for being crafted in 18k gold with platinum prongs as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal.
With prongs suitable for regular wear. A versatile diamond band!
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale. Antique box is not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5 1/4. The prongs are good but the shank is a bit thin at the back north to south - Best to discuss extent of sizing with your local jeweler who would be doing the work.
The largest center diamond is 6.5mm and measures about 1.2 carat alone. The flanking diamonds are about 5mm and a little over half a carat each. I would not remove the stones for an accurate measurement but estimates to around 2.3carat total weight in diamonds.
The piece weighs 2.6 grams. It stands 5mm off the finger. Ring face is 7mm wide north to south by 16.5mm east west measuring the diamond settings.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
There are four worn prongs but each stone is held in place by 6 other prongs each so they are in absolutely no danger of coming free as they are surrounded with length on all sides. The center stone can rotate slightly and click when you tap it but again will not come free and is not in any danger of loss. As mentioned the shank is a bit thin as this was worn stacked over the years.
To the eye the piece appears quite clean but these are typical antique diamonds with some quirks. One smaller end stone has a notch in the girdle with some shallow flakes of loss just above it leaving a frosty unpolished spot from an inclusion that reached the girdle edge here. The notch is tucked up against a prong on the inside edge but it is eye visible if you are seeking it out, while with normal wear it appears complete and round and in all situations completely fills the space and setting.
The center stone has some nibbles in several places around the girdle edge but these are like little flea bites with just one little spot where the result of an indented natural inclusion leaves a frosty spot on the outside edge. This is not really eye visible as the stone appears complete, it's just under magnification that we can see the girdle isn't perfectly polished. The largest stone has two areas of inclusions, one a small crystal formation and the other a shadow with a tiny carbon speck, these are both on the outside edge of the stone and slightly eye visible. The other end stone has some natural inclusions around the open culet which can reflect a bit within the stone exuding a sort of frosty area right around the culet when looking through the stone which is slightly eye visible. Nothing glaring, it is beautiful to the eye while wearing. These don't have much detectible warmth and face up bright white and quite sparkly.
I gave it a better cleaning after all the sunshine shots as I noticed when I was studying it that there were some specks on the underside (it was quite filthy when I got it : ), the first two pics in the listing are after the additional cleaning so you can see some of the frosty specks that show in other photos were cleared away.
I don't prefer to grade my antique diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about way later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. The scale does not do antique stones justice as they were expertly hand cut in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now, but I always describe everything seen under magnification with more detail than letter grades provide.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
