ABOUT:

A chunky geometric setting props up a gorgeous eye clean old European cut diamond. This French antique piece is crafted in 18k white gold with four prongs making the shape of a square as the setting around the round old cut diamond.

Also exciting to find that the antique diamond is eye clean! Really a unique and interesting setting to showcase a very fine stone. This would make a special engagement ring, anniversary or right hand statement ring or a great stacker with nice height and sturdy shoulders.

Found in France with their hallmark for 18k gold.

I don't prefer to grade my antique diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about way later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. The scale does not do antique stones justice as they were expertly hand cut to their best advantage, in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now. Their uniqueness and quirks are expected and part of their charm, but - I will pass along the grades as I received them: I/J in color and VS in clarity.

Especially considering the age of the stone, it is very lively and sparkly, not dull or lifeless in any way. Shooting light from within the fiery stone even in ambient light, it is fun to wear.

Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.

MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5 3/4.
The diamond measures about 6.8mm. I do not remove antique stones from their settings for exact measurements but sold to me at around 1.1 carat which aligns with my estimates.

The piece weighs a very sturdy 6.35 grams.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The diamond is eye clean with only some indented natural inclusions on one very small area of the girdle, but this is pushed right up and under the triangular prong so it is not really noticeable. Along with one rough / unpolished spot in another area of the girdle, again seen under magnification when studying the girdle from the side. No damage to the diamond. When looking at it face down, there may appear to be some cloudiness because of the gold setting encasing the base of the diamond. But this is not a flaw, it is just how the diamond is set so it reflects the setting. But the setting also makes it a very interesting piece so I guess they go hand in hand! The thick prongs taper towards the base so it is an open back, but there is only a small circular opening below the culet to let the light pass through. I also noticed under magnification some build up in a spot or two. I gave the piece multiple cleanings but it seems to be stuck between the bottom of the stone and the inside of those chunky prongs. Again the diamond is excellent, eye clean and even mostly spotless under strong magnification with the exception of the indented naturals mentioned above. So these are not condition problems or flaws or damage in any way, but I just try to note every single thing I see under magnification so there are no surprises.

The white gold setting has a warm glow from age. This is also typical of antique white gold where the rhodium coating can be redone if desired to give it a more vibrant platinum color. But I always sell my antiques in original condition. There is also wear to the prongs. They are large and triangular and the stone does not move, but they don't provide a ton of overlap on each of the four sides so I wanted to note that as well. Super sturdy shank all the way around. Extreme pickiness aside, it a special piece with exceptional antique diamond in a very interesting and unique setting.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
