Chunky French Antique Art Deco 1.7 Carat Tall Square Old Mine Cut DIAMOND FuLL ETERNITY Band Ring 18k White GOLD
ABOUT:
NOTE that the "divots" to the gold on the side of the shank are Not damage - these are the French hallmark strikes for 18k gold with a goldsmith stamp so the gold is not damaged, but intentionally marked on the vertical edge.
Fabulous "crusty" texture on this one with the chunky old mine cuts cropping out of the geometric band around all sides. I love this diamond full eternity band especially for the shape of the old cuts.
Crafted in 18k white gold, this French antique piece found in Paris is set with 21 diamonds totaling around 1.7 carat. Two of the diamonds are modern replacement brilliant cuts while the rest are interestingly hand chiseled old mine cuts, square to rectangular-ish in shape with long triangular facets to the crown. Also interesting that while they are square, they were set at an angle to have their points at the north south edge instead of flat if that makes sense.
Some of the diamonds' crowns are so high, the stones are almost as deep as they are wide. Mine cuts typically have three rows of facets to the crown whereas these have the single row of long scissor cut facets. Extra chunky with that great antique sparkle. Almost like a Peruzzi, but they don't have the three rows of facets to the crown. Perhaps a combination of a French cut / Old Mine Cut ? as diamond cutters at the time used their personal knowledge, taste and expertise to enhance each diamond.
It is always fun to find uniquely cut antique diamonds! And the vertical edge of the band is lined creating square bezels to add geometry. Sturdy hand feel. Amazing sparkle and eye catching impact with interest from any angle. The two replacement stones sit flatter as they don't have the old cut, but they are in the same area so I would wear those to the inside palm of the hand and let the high crowned old mine cuts drape the top and sides of the finger.
The perfect stacker, and also a beautiful worn alone. Again the texture really strikes me, like a cobblestone effect but in a linear band - just a wonderful old cut sparkle.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7 1/2, not sizable. It goes a little over on the ring sizer mandrel but the center of the band does not cross the 7 3/4 so it sits right between those. The band is 3.1mm wide north south with a depth of about 2.5mm. It weighs 3.2g
Each of the diamonds is about 2.5mm give or take. Varying depths to the stones but many crop out from the surface of the band. I would never remove them to ascertain exact carat weight but it is at least 1.7 carats total weight in diamonds. It is still a skinny band, but with the chunky cuts and the fact that the diamonds are set all the way around, they add up to a nice carat weight.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
I mention the texture, this piece not only looks "crusty" but even feels like chunky old cuts. The stones with their high crowns can be felt on the adjacent fingers while wearing. Under magnification she certainly looks her age with numerous nicks and chips to the diamonds. We do see this with eternity bands because with the stones set all the way around, they frequently come into contact with surfaces on the inside palm of the hand. Combine that with the incredibly high crowns results is quite a bit of nicks, scuffs, flakes of loss. Diamonds don't chip like many other gems because they are so hard, but those flakes of loss that come away in shards leave little unpolished areas where there is a difference in texture and a frosty appearance compared to the polished facets of the stones. They all still appear complete to the eye, none are broken in half, and they still fill the bezel spaces, but it is with studying that you see those areas of wear to the surfaces. Typical antique diamonds, some eye clean, others with faint natural inclusions. Some with warm hues. This isn't the ring for a person who likes their diamonds perfect, but it couldn't be more me with the fabulously unique old cuts. None of the stones move and the shank is quite thick / sturdy, but I always recommend gentler wear on 100 year old pieces with multiple stones, especially considering that two had already been replaced when I purchased it.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
