ABOUT:
French antique signet ring in warm, glowing antique 18k gold. The softened ring face has a shield engraved with a lion rampant wearing a crown. At the top of the ring face is an additional engraved crown. It is worn by time and its age and history giving it a true antique look. The design of the crown symbol signifies the level of Nobility to be that of a Marquis (higher than a Count, Viscount, Baron, Knight, or Lord.). Of course now France is a republic and there is no royal family recognized by the French state, but as is the case here, the owner likely had a title and could trace their nobility back to the French royal family.
This pinky ring was always intentionally a pinky ring! Tradition dictated that at the age of 18, individuals would receive a family signet. For women, it was to be worn on the pinky, and for men on the ring finger.
This Paris find has a beautiful buttery gold patina. And the back/inside of the ring face is closed (not hollowed out) making the piece all solid 18k gold. French hallmark for 18k gold on the back.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pics. Antique boxes, props, staircases and bannisters ; ) not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 2 1/2. The ring face Is 10mm north south, the piece weighs 4.9g.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Quite a lot of surface wear giving it a great antique smoothed over look from being lovingly worn through the years. Still legible, the lion especially. Evidence of a sizing to the back and the shank is a bit blunt on the edges.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
