CRUCIFORM 1.25 Carat Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Ring Antique EDWARDIAN 18k Gold Platinum Five Stone
ABOUT:
It's that time of year again for Mouse to clean out her house! So I'll be bringing you some releases from my personal collection this week including this one!
I love geometry and old cut diamonds and this one presents both with four larger old mine cut diamonds surrounding a center old mine which creates a cruciform pattern.
This piece is crafted in 18k gold with the diamond settings topped in platinum as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal. They have milgrain detail surrounding each bezel and a really nice fire and color for old cut diamonds that were cut in much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of modern diamonds produced each year now.
Found in England. Stamped 18CT PT for 18k and platinum.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
It is a size 5 3/4. It weighs 2.9grams.
The ring face is 12.5mm north south and 4.2mm off the finger.
The four larger diamonds are 4 to 4.3mm each and the center diamond is about 2.8mm. I would never remove the stones from the antique setting for an exact measurement but estimates to around 1.25 Carat total weight in diamonds.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The ring face lists slightly to one side with a slight twist to the shank but this was not noticeable to me when wearing. You can see it in the photos when it is the box though to determine if that would be bothersome to you. It gives it a bit of an organic feel along with the slightly varying sizes of the old cut diamonds, which were all hand cut and are therefore not perfectly uniform - which is a joy to find these eccentricities in old cut diamonds.
Nice and fiery old mine cut diamonds with a bright color whereas many old cut diamonds came from mines back then that produced warmer rough cut stones. One of the stones, the largest, is eye clean. The others have faint natural inclusions typical for antique stones - a warm silk or crystal here or there, one small carbon speck, two with an indented natural inclusion that carried up to the surface. These are slightly to very slightly eye visible (not to my eyes which are in their forties) so nothing really glaring compared to the fire of the stones which does stand out in a fabulous way.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
Thanks so much for looking at my items!
