Several heavy hitters coming up but first I wanted to list some more affordably priced pieces compared to the ones with large diamonds. These sweeties too are all antique, all unique and special, and come in all price points as I try to continue offering pieces for beginning collectors all the way to high end. Today's grouping comes from my last trip to France, purchased there from partners and at the markets there.
ABOUT:
Here we have a striking cruciform ring with 18k gold shank holding four clear white old rose cut gemstones in the textbook silver collet setting favored during the Georgian to early Victorian periods. I love these collet settings so I have been wearing this in my personal collection for awhile now.
Three of the stones are quartz / rock crystal and one is a white topaz. This is not uncommon as jewelers of the period used materials that were available to them and matched well to the eye. Clearly meant to look like diamonds, this one was purchased during a time when diamonds were reserved for royalty and upper class, making these gems a more affordable option for jewelry lovers in the middle classes. Iit remains quite collectible today because it was highly popular during that period and thus holds historic value. Antique jewelry lovers enjoy finding them as they played a part in jewelry history. These pieces were beautifully made and becsme so popular even back then, that even members of the highest classes had paste pieces in their collections.
This is a fun geometric one and layers well with other pieces. The shank is in 18k gold and the collet settings holding the diamonds in closed back settings are silver as was customary for the period to use a white metal.
French antique hallmark for 18k gold used in the early 1800s and discontinued by the very early 1900s making this one a late Georgian to early Victorian piece .
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
Antique box not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 8 1/2 slightly over.
The ring face is 12mm north south. The stones are each about 4.5 to 5mm measuring the exposed portions (the edges are surrounded in silver on all sides.
It weighs 2.8g
CONDITION NOTES:
The tops of the stones where the crowns of the rose cut facets meet are dull with abrasions. The stones overall are not dull or lifeless but they are softer stones so you can see the wear on each one. One has a chip to the side in addition to the surface abrasions to the top facets. They still fill the bezels and are in no danger of falling out. There is a repair inside the back of the ring face where a strap of gold was added to reinforce the piece at the shoulders and there is some solder that extends around the base of three of the four stone settings. Sorrows sorrows but it's 200 years old so we see these things sometimes on antique jeweler that was made for the common class, it is quite often more delicate. Sold as is, no returns. The shank is a bit out of round and shows evidence of a sizing. It is a bit thin but these things don't show while wearing.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
I enjoy making my customers happy and matching unique pieces with new homes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! It means a lot to me that you are visiting my shop! : )
