DANCING PIG Lucky Clover Antique Gilt Solid Silver Pendant Charm Jugendstil Good Luck Medallion Figural

Many years ago when I sold more silver than gold, I used to sell a lot of these antique good luck charms. They were super popular in the Astro Hungarian region and are fun to collect because you can mix and match all the different styles and designs.

On my recent inventory trip I visited Austria and Hungary so I sought out some of these charms that are specific to the region to bring back to my customers. They are quite hard to find, especially the ones with words or whimsical motifs.

Please note the measurements as it is difficult to determine scale from the zoomed photos I am required to present.

This one is crafted in solid silver with a dancing pig holding a three leaf clover in its mouth. Both symbols of good luck during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

From my research it comes from the expression "Schwein gehabt" which translates literally to "got pig," but is a phrase used meaning "to have a stroke of good luck". The belief went back even further to the Middle Ages, when owning a pig was a sign of wealth and guaranteed that a family would not go hungry. Around the turn of the 20th century, this concept was often translated over to the design of Jugendstil jewelry pieces like this one.

It would be interesting on a charm bracelet, or looks absolutely adorable and whimsical as a pendant.

The backs of these were often engraved or personalized but this one is blank and could be personalized by your local engraver if desired.

There are antique hallmark strikes on the loop that have worn and are no longer legible.

Chain in photos is not included. Any other items shown in group photos are listed separately in the shop. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

MEASUREMENTS:
Dimensions: 19mm in diameter, 23mm north south to the attached loop (not including the jump ring).
Weight: 2.5 grams.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
