I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!
ABOUT:
Love these romantic pieces! Typically always French - here we have a Wonderful dated traditional very early Victorian Gimmel wedding band in 18k gold. At first glance it appears like a normal little donut / skinny stacker / wedding band until you discover the seam and notice that it is actually two rings which twist and nest perfectly together.
These are quite unbelievable in the fabrication as it nests so perfectly together, the seam is almost invisible. This one has a comfort fit being rounded like a donut band, feels so good to slip on and off or spin around the finger. It is the same width and depth.
Inside you discover the secret with the engraved names and date of the couple: "J.C. V.E. Unis le 26 Aout 1839") in French, translating to:
"J.C. V.E. United the 26th of August, 1839").
This engraving is not visible when the ring is closed and being worn as the engraving is intricately done in the flat inside edges of the two bands that nest together.
This is an early one with 1838 being the second year of the Victorian era, so it misses the Georgian specification just barely.
The word gimmel is derived from the French "jumelle," meaning twin, indicating the two separate bands that fold perfectly together to create one ring. Similar to a puzzle ring, it opens but the two separate bands remain interlocked, to represent the two parts of the couple joining together - two individuals but yet inseparable. How romantic!
These rings are becoming more and more scarce as they are typically fragile, and it is difficult to repair them. Due to their intricate nature they are not sizable.
No hallmarks remain but textbook French piece where the standard is always 18k and tested to confirm. It has a beautiful rich antique patina.
Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it is difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7 1/4
Weighs 2.1 grams
1.8mm north south and deep
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. But this one is pretty perfect in terms of shape and how it nests together with the tiny peg inside. I will recommend that it of course needs a gentle hand. It does not need force to nest them together and you wouldn't want to damage the gold by trying to fold it together strongly, but once you get the knack of how they nest, they slide right into place : )
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
