ABOUT:
I seem to be on an old mine cut diamond in bezel settings kick lately! Here's a very fine one with an eye clean and fiery old mine cut diamond in a substantial and sleek, domed 18k setting.
And look at the pretty ring booty / ring butt (as we call it in the trade : ). Openwork details to let the light through and so the setting "breathes" on the finger. The antique diamond measures around 1 1/4 carat, featured beautifully in the setting which definitely has some age to it and is vintage. I suspect the setting however is not as old as the stone which is antique. It could be a case where granny's heirloom diamond was reset in the vintage period.
Sleek and comfortable to wear, but still with a lovely drama and substantial footprint. With the diamond flush mounted into the setting and raised just slightly, this one won't catch on clothing.
It's a beautiful stone with a timeless and on trend setting to match. Found in France with their hallmark for 18k gold.
These diamond bands are always very popular in the shop. This one could be considered unisex as these rings are popular with men and women. The gypsy ring was incredibly popular during the Victorian era into the early 1900s and its timeless design remains an ever favored and wearable choice for today. This ring is substantial enough to wear alone but also layers well with other pieces.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 6 1/4 on my mandrel. The ring face 7.6mm north south. It is 5.8mm tall off the finger. It weighs 6.1 grams.
I do not remove my stones from their settings for exact measurements but the diamond is over a carat. It measures about 6.7mm and faces up at around 1.25 carat. This is an estimate as the depth of the stone cannot be measured in the setting, the thickness of the girdle can't be viewed, nor can the exact diameter of the stone which is encased in the bezel and extends further an unknown amount. But again estimated carat weight is about 1 1/4 carat.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All antique hand cut diamonds of course have a more limited supply since they are no longer made in this way. There are only so many in existence compared to the millions of carats of modern machine cut diamonds made every year. These have withstood the test of time. This one has a very bright white color and a better than most fire. Also lovely to find that the stone is eye clean. There is a very small indented natural inclusion on one of the side facets a little outside the crown facet seen under magnification. There is another one on the outside edge of the stone tucked up against the bezel which appears as a small unpolished area but again I am not able to detect it without magnification and it helps that the bezel overlaps some of it. GIA defines these natural characteristics of the stone as a dent that occurs under the surface of a diamond as a result of the diamond cutter's decision not to polish it off, because doing so could end up harming the diamond so the cutters would work around it - this is not considered a defect or blemish. There are a few faint speck inclusions also seen only under magnification.
Some wear to the bezel where you can see some unevenness to the gold from wear and thinning but the stone is still completely encased on all sides and does not move. No girdle edges of the stone are visible.
Feel free to request more videos and check out my website for more images as I also have it in some group shots which will help you see the stone comparatively to other antique diamonds.
My items do very well without paperwork so I have not sent the stone for certification and would not want to remove it from the setting to do so, but I always provide as much detail as possible with measurements, condition notes and many extra photos (see website) to capture it true to life in various lighting conditions, which can be translated to grading scales if desired.
Some surface wear to the gold setting which can catch the light due to the smooth mirrored finish of the piece but it has a wonderful buttery glow. You can see some rub marks on the vertical north and south edges, it may have been stacked. But It's beautiful.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
