ABOUT:
Wonderful French regional antique earrings in 18k gold, each decorated with a floral design highlighted with blue, red and white enamel. These earrings are a nice size and have a very antique look, like something you would see in a period movie. Beautiful antique rosy gold patina. This Paris find pair of earrings is a personal favorite of mine as I love floral French traditional jewelry.
Would be a beautiful "something old" and "something blue" for a bride.
The ear wires are inserted from the back of the ear clip into a loop at the front top of the earring. This style of earring also has an additional curled wire connecting the front and back curved sections of the earring, I assume for added stability. The name of this style earring "Poissarde" is derived from the fishwives of Paris who were the first to wear them and who played a significant role during the French Revolution. Regional, or folk jewelry, is defined by a particular style confined to a particular region.
Hinged ear wires with hooked end. Please note the measurements! These look great with another French regional piece, an antique chain with enameling on the links as shown in pics.
French antique hallmark for 18k gold used during the Victorian period with goldsmith stamp, these date to the 1800s.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
They measure about 30mm top to bottom from the ear wire to the bottom by about 7mm wide. Weight is 1.9 grams combined.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
These pretty much always need a delicate hand with 100 year old hinges. One of the hinges was repaired and is quite sturdy, this is not seen while wearing and they are definitely wearable. It's just that with the hooked ends, it takes some practice and again a gentle hand to guide the ear wire into the opening, without applying a ton of pressure or slipping which could snap said old hinges. If you're familiar with these types of French antique earrings though, you'll be fine as they function as expected. I just always try to give that guidance because antique earrings can be finicky, especially when they have hinges. In the past I've had buyers that are unfamiliar, struggle with the application of wearing them. The enamel is in better than most condition, fully complete in color which is wonderful considering age of over 175 years. These were fabricated with hollow space in between the gold layers so from wear there are three holes to the side of one earring, and two to the side of the other. Again not really visible while wearing unless you are viewing them from the side.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
