ABOUT:
Awesome French Antique pendant of the figural lucky number 13 designed with vibrant red to pink square cut rubies and set with rose cut diamonds for sparkle. It is outlined with gorgeous openwork ivy details so the design really pops. I've h.ad a few of these over the years but the ivy details on this one really add a stunning accent, so ornate, they even engraved the leaves on the back side. Love this one!
The ivy motif was popular in Victorian times in jewelry as it represents life and eternity (essentially immortality), along with clinging attachment. It also was used to express fidelity and friendship.
13 was traditionally considered a lucky number in France prior to World War I, and was used in numerical form as a good luck symbol during the Victorian to Art Nouveau period.
I assume the rubies are synthetic, a very popular choice for the period.
Found in Paris. No hallmarks remain but clearly solid gold and not plated or gold filled. Sold to me as 18k which is the standard in France and tested to confirm.
Any props not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.
MEASUREMENTS:
32mm to the top of the attached loop (not including the dangling jump ring) by 27mm wide. It weighs 2.85 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
A bit of wear to the loop (which helps us identify it as real / solid gold). On the bottom right side of the number 3 there is a bit of discoloration on the front and back. I think the diamond may have needed reinforcing or resetting there. Not super glaring but a slight difference in hue. Gaps between the channel set rubies but they are spaced uniformly.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
