ABOUT:

Beautiful 1800s antique French early Victorian dormeuse earrings with linear mounts propping up a rose cut diamond in a cupped / closed back and foiled collet setting. These are in 18k antique gold with a lever back. I think the rim of the collet settings may be silver as they have a bit of a grayer patina. So elegant with the warm antique gold and beautiful settings with the moody sparkle of the rose cuts.

Nice sized little disco ball faceted rose cuts facing up at 1 carat each / 2 carats total (exact carat weight cannot be known as the depth can't be measured in the closed settings without removing them which would ruin the settings). Please note the measurements.

The wires have a hooked end that are inserted from the back of the ear and latch into the little ball loop atop the front of the earring.

Stamped with the French Victorian period hallmark which was used on 18k gold in the 1800s and discontinued in the early 1900s which confirms the age of the earrings. I love seeing this hallmark as any date range specific marks helps give us some history on the piece. : ). The gold is a slightly pale rosy color.

Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

17mm top to bottom, the ear pendant part is a little over 8mm wide and the exposed / visible tops of the diamonds are about 6.5mm each. Again this is just the measurement of the visible portion of the diamonds, as they may widen out into the collets which curve up and over the girdles of the stones so we don't exactly know where the diamond end and the gold begins. The bottom part of the earrings with the diamonds in the settings are about 6mm deep.

Depth of the stones is also unknown as they should not be removed but appearing as a 2 carat pair of earrings.

The pair weighs a little over 3 grams combined.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

These definitely have an antique look to them. There is discoloration and spotting and age to the foil back along with natural inclusions to the stones. One reads a bit grayer than the other and one has a slight warm blush to it from age to the foil. The stones are well set with no chips or cracks. Just the common aging to the setting causing them to read gray and warm but the surfaces have a lovey sheen and polish to catch the light for sparkle.

They are 125+ years old with old gold hinges so we don't recommend for 24/7 wear and you should avoid getting these wet. But they are surprisingly sturdy for age. These are very popular, I’ve sold many and buyers often report back that it just takes a little practice and patience inserting the hooked end from behind and then latching them while on the ear but that they get the hang of it with time. : )
Still beautiful and appropriate for gentle handling considering age and fabrication.

Thanks so much for looking at my items!

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

All items hand picked by me, one at a time from all over the world. All listings individually written by me, and not AI, after studying each piece to discuss its beauties and its ; ) eccentricities (which I am picky to point out).

Many of my listings include group shots – I find the comparisons between pieces help show scale, diamond hues, etc. All items in group shots are inventory, but refer to the website to see what items have sold out and to watch for new listings from the grouping to appear on the home page.
