ABOUT:
Personal collection release!
These antique Perpignan Garnets top my list of all time favorite gemstones. Their delicious juicy berry coloring, light reflectivity and beautiful glow from within just make them so special and ever so appealing to me.
I purchased this Perpignan garnet piece as a broken bar pin / brooch from France. I had my jewelers add a loop to wear as a pendant. Because of this, the piece is in excellent condition with the stones nearly flawless from surface wear (since brooches are by nature more gently worn). Often times these garnets from the period can be scuffed but this one is fabulous.
The closed, foiled and domed back settings of the garnets are crafted in 18k gold. The loops added are in 14k gold, in an effort to find a closest match to the antique patina of the original Victorian era piece. No hallmarks remain as the original French stamp was on the pin parts but these French antique pieces are very distinctive and identifiable as being only from there in all the world, for those of us who collect and are familiar with them.
The glowing purplish red stones are of the most exceptional color - layering beautifully in a neck mess or worn alone as a minimalist and geometric pop of color. I love it but I try to keep my personal collection pretty humble so I am always cycling through and releasing things after enjoying them for a time.
These garnets are named as such for the region where they were mined in the South of France. They are known for their beautiful color and brilliance, along with the way the stones were cut. These mines have long since closed and this piece bears the French antique hallmark used primarily in the 1800s and discontinued in the early 1900s, verifying their authenticity of age and the joy of knowing exactly where they came from. In olden times Perpignan Garnets were thought to cure blood disorders and excessive anger, and symbolized constancy and loyalty.
Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.
MEASUREMENTS:
38mm end to end including the attached loop, but not the jump ring. 6mm wide by 4mm deep with the domed backs. It weighs 1.9g
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
As mentioned the garnet piece was a brooch crafted in 18k gold. The jump ring and loop are 14k to best match the patina. You can see the smoothed parts of the back where the pin parts were. Some dark patina to the domed backs. Some natural inclusions to the stones but no real damage and an amazing glowing purplish red color with some variances from stone to stone. Note the loop is a bit dainty.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
