GEORGIAN French Antique 7 Foil Back Rose Cut Diamond Semainier 18k GOLD Skinny Bands Stacker
Overheard today at Mouse's Household: "That's it! We are officially shutting down the shop and keeping EVERYTHING!" Sigh... if only I could keep all the good stuff and still become a millionaire small business owner : ). But seriously, some wonderful favorites in this week's listings - thanks for looking!
ABOUT:
First up is this all original Georgian Semainier ring. This Paris find has 7 skinny bands connected with gold straps and set with foil back rose cut diamonds in silver collet settings.
Dainty piece but it wears like a wide band stacker or wedding ring made up of the smaller skinny bands. "Semainier" is French for "weekly". Each of the 7 skinny bands represents a day of the week - time passing day by day or even love "every day of the week."
This piece has the French Georgian era hallmark stamped on several of the bands. The hallmark was used from 1819 to 1838 which confirms the age of the piece.
The straps hold the piece together and would typically slide and move independently around the shank to hold the seven gold bands together but the previous owner used a little adhesive to fix those straps in place so that the cluster of diamonds is permanently clustered together to make a flower pattern. This is not visible except under magnification. I only noticed it because I have one of these in my personal collection, same fabrication with there three straps of gold holding the 7 gold wire bands, but on mine, the straps move. It can be a little random how they slide and move so I kind of like how this one has the straps affixed and the daisy cluster of collet set rose cuts is fixed. But if you choose to remove the adhesive or the straps, you could then rotate the bands to splay them out like little stars or slide the straps around.
This 200+ year old piece has a lovely antique patina with rich rosy gold that has subtle buttery lowlights.
Antique box not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Currently a size 5 on my ring sizer mandrel, a little over but does not reach 5 1/4.. With the bands all together it measures 7.7mm wide at the straps and 4.3mm at the back.. It weighs 3.1 grams. The silver collets holding the diamonds are each about 3.8mm in diameter. Exact measurements of the diamonds are unknown as the settings are closed backed and they widen out an unknown amount in the collets.
CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. Typical antique diamonds with natural inclusions, irregular facets and warmer gray to champagne hues from age to the foil. A few nicks or a rough edge seen under magnification but the diamonds are small so they just add a glint of glitter. These old diamonds were cut by hand so they may have always had a rough edge here or there. This is a dainty piece as the bands are very delicate. They have a few curves but are secured with the three gold straps,. Also with the closed back foil settings, you should avoid getting it wet. But with all my items - Please note this is not a mint condition item.
