ABOUT:

This one is a release from my personal collection and will take with it many happy memories of an anniversary trip to England which we also used as a sourcing trip where I bought the piece. I try to keep my PC pretty humble, and only keep enough to wear but sometimes it is so painful to part with them! Very sad to let this one go, I already regret it. : )

This antique Victorian era (or older) ring features a custom heart cut garnet in a closed back bezel setting. It is held on each side by engraved and cutout hands with ornate cuffs extending to the shank. I love figural pieces and I love garnets so I have enjoyed wearing this one. A fun figural stacker - and with the glossy and unique heart cut stone.

No hallmarks remain but it tests at 10k gold, maybe a little over. Note the hue - it has a lot of patina with a sort of warm, pale yellow hue. It does not really read as rose or yellow gold and it is certainly not white gold or silver, so the coloring is unique. The piece is real gold, not gold filled or plated. The color is just a result of the alloys used at the time which were not regulated and there was no set formula back then, which is why we often see varying hues to antique gold - which also leads to each aging differently with time.

Please also note that the garnet reads as a very dark, deep crimson to almost black when viewed face on. It is only by angling the piece that we see the more red inner glow. In ambient light the red is especially subtle. I was able to highlight it in some of the pictures but this more vibrant red glow is really only seen in brighter, direct light. I also noted in the pictures that the stone appears quite scuffed when in actuality, it has a lovely sheen and polish for age. It is not dull or matte finish. There is some surface wear as expected (we would know it is a replacement or reproduction if it didn't have at least some wear for age) but the direct light I had to use to bring out the color also in turn highlighted the surface wear making it appear worse than with normal wear. So hopefully all the photos in various conditions give you a true idea of how the piece wears. There are some natural inclusions in the stone too, seen under lit magnification that can sometimes catch the light. Please see my website where I am able to add more photos.

Antique box is not included. Please note the detailed measurements that I always provide, as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures where I am required to show zoomed in detail.

MEASUREMENTS:

Size 8 3/4. 11mm north south at the ring face, the stone is 9mm wide and it stands 4.5mm tall off the finger. It weighs 1.9g.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

Some small nicks and surface wear to the stone but overall lovely sheen. Very legible. Some patina. The edges of the shank are a bit blunt with the thinner fabrication of the period but the piece is stable and does not flex. There is one little gold dot on the thumb on the right side that may be a reinforcement? Some tool marks inside and the back of the ring face is a bit uneven with the solder marks connecting the shoulders to the ring face but it is not uncomfortable to wear.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
