ABOUT:
Per multiple requests I have been trying to source more gypsy band rings with larger diamonds. : )
This late art deco early vintage chunker is a fine one in a really beautiful (and heavy!) setting. It features an extra deep transitional cut diamond measuring around 1.2 carat. It is set in a gorgeous 18k gold band with rosy highlights from age and beautiful engraved details of little forget me not flowers and linear and rivet details. I just love how the top half is decorated. Very nice quality hand feel, it weighs over 12 grams of solid gold (no hollowed out areas on this one except for the opening behind the diamond to let light pass through.) The bezel is outlined in platinum as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal, it also serves as an illusion setting with the white metal making the diamond look even larger.
The gypsy ring was incredibly popular during the Victorian era into the early 1900s and its timeless design remains an ever favored and wearable choice for today. Rings such as this were also a popular choice for men to wear during this period as well so it is a true unisex ring even with floral details meant to be a romantic nod with the forget me nots.
Found in Paris with the French hallmark for 18k gold. The patina is lovely, with a yellow gold glow from the recesses and a rosy gold hue on the raised polished areas. The sought after patina that cannot be found on modern gold (so it is not at all like the vibrant pink rose gold of today).
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box not included.
A versatile piece - right hand ring, statement piece, or stacker, alternative wedding band, etc. for male or female.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
It is currently a size 8 slightly over but does not reach 8 1/4. The ring face 12mm north south tapering towards the back but still quite sturdy. It is 5.4mm tall off the finger. It weighs 12.3g.
I do not remove my stones from their vintage/ antique settings for exact measurements. The exposed visible portion measures about 6.5mm (but widens out further in the flush mount bezel). It has a very deep pavilion, estimating to about 1.2 carat just measuring the visible portions.
CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. But this one is pretty great - very sturdy setting with the stone secure, surrounded by beautiful details.
The diamond has an indented natural inclusions on the very outside edge tucked up against the bezel. It appears as a triangular shaped frosty crease at the surface right there on the edge. The stone is perfectly stable, and it is not glaring but it is eye visible if you are seeking it out. GIA defines this as a dent that occurs under the surface of a diamond as a result of the diamond cutter's decision not to polish it off, because doing so could end up harming the diamond so the cutters would work around it - this is not considered a defect or blemish.
The stone is otherwise eye clean. There is one frosty speck to the outside edge of the culet, another natural characteristic of the stone, but this is not eye visible and seen only under magnification.
Typical for antique stones, it does display a warmth in color but some of this is also due to it being flush set and surrounded by thick gold on all sides. I found it depends on the lighting and viewing angles.
I don't prefer to grade my older diamonds with the Four C's grading scale which came about later for machine cut diamonds with mathematically perfected facets. It often times doesn't do their one of a kind-ness justice as these were cut in a much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of machine cut diamonds made each year now. Their uniqueness and quirks are expected and part of their charm, but I will pass along that the place I purchased it from graded it I/J in color (again as an estimation without removing the stone.)
Evidence of a sizing with slightly different hue to the gold there at the very back. There are no dark spots to the gold, it can reflects its surroundings but the beautiful engraved designs mask wear and reflections as well. Due to age - please note this is not a mint condition item.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
