ABOUT:
These one is a head turner with its whimsical design, larger scale and colorful sparkle. I love the little legs on each side!
A great antique look with organic wear, varying, non uniform cuts and colors, the rose cuts certainly hand cut with frosted girdles. The piece has an awesome texture from all the old stones. It is set with five emeralds, 31 rubies & 21 rose cut diamonds. Wonderful coloring, I especially love the trillion shaped triangular emerald at the head.
Domed body, to me this is a ladybug, or ladybird which our friends across the pond adorably name them, but some also suggested a scarab or beetle. Larger size at over an inch wide. Sturdy hand feel although I suspect it may be filled with some stabilizing material vs. being sold gold all the way through? It's quite heavy.
It was a brooch as evidenced by some of the smoothing to the center back which has a slightly different patina. Tests at 14k gold, from the back to the legs to the loops.
Chain in photos is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
26mm to the attached loop, not including the dangling jump ring, by 26mm wide by 9mm deep. It weighs 8.1 grams so a sturdy hand feel.
The largest stones are the emeralds at 4mm. The rubies are 2 to 2.8mm. The gemstones are elgonaged / rectangular. The rose cut diamonds are small, about 2-2.3mm each also freeform in their hand cut fabrication.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Typical antique diamonds with some warm hues and faint natural inclusions. A few appearing a bit frosty, especially on the unpolished edges which makes them appear quite old. Several have nicks and nibbles and small chips. Same with the gemstones, some small nicks, one ruby has a cracked corner with both parts still held in the setting so no glaring loss. All the stones fill the spaces and completely encrust the top of the bug but signs of age to the stones. Natural inclusions and varying hues to the gemstones as well.
This is not a condition issue but note that the little legs are a bit blunt / sharp. This is just how it was made with the detailed gold.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
